Critic Review
“Unwittingly [Karajan] had filled the void left by the death of Hitler in that part of the German psyche which craves for a leader. He was unpredictable, ruthless and outspoken. Nobody - at any rate nobody in Austria - ever questioned Karajan's right to do exactly what he wanted. He moved everywhere with a circle of sycophants, who tried to justify their existence by speaking for him whenever possible, and I had to make it clear right away that I could not function at one remove from the conductor. As always, the direct approach worked. I don't think Karajan ever understood how much of his troubles were due to the people he allowed to surround him. Such petty issues often distorted one's view of Karajan the musician.”

manager of classical recording
for Decca, 1967-75

Critic Reviews
“Bustabo was a technical gymnast of a quite extraordinary kind and at eighteen was already set for an international career….In 1941, in Germany, she and Mengelberg were taped in a splendid series of concerto performances of which the Bruch g minor was without question the most radiant and marvellous. It’s one of the very best performances ever recorded of this piece and shows her at her best.”

Critic Review
“Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi won International Casals Competition in Budapest om 1963, and was soon performing with the major orchestras around the world. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall with the New Japan Philharmonic, in Avery Fisher Hall with the NHK Symphony, and was the soloist at the opening concert of Tokyo’s new Suntory Hall. He has toured Japan with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the former Soviet Union with Seiji Ozawa and the Toho Gakuen Orchestra, with whom he also performed at the United Nations in a concert that was televised worldwide. Other tours have been with Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, the Tokyo Philharmonic to London and Paris, and the Austrian Broadcasting Symphony. In North America and Europe he has performed with the National Symphony, the Chicago, Indianapolis, Toronto, and Vancouver symphonies; London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Concertgebouw, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the ORTF in Paris, the Berlin Radio Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, and the Czech Philharmonic, with which he recorded the Dvorak Cello Concerto for CBS-Sony.”

Critic Review
“Denis Matthews made his orchestral debut at the Proms in 1938, playing Beethoven’s c minor piano concerto. He served in the RAF from 1940-46, and then resumed a full-time performing career, playing with all the major UK orchestras under Thomas Beecham, John Barbirolli and Malcolm Sargent. He had particular affinity with the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and was renowned for his unaffected refined pianism. A performer who was more concerned to serve the interests of the music rather than the musician’s ego, his brilliant, questioning mind brought magic and freshness to his interpretations, and made him an inspiring teacher who encouraged his students to think beyond the notes on the page. Later in his life, he gave up performing to dedicate himself to teaching and lecturing, broadcasting and writing. His edition of the Mozart piano sonatas, prepared with Stanley Sadie, became widely used. His study of Beethoven received wide critical acclaim.”
