Becoming Chenrezik:

A How-To Manual for Mantra Meditation

Teaching by Lama Kathy Wesley

August 11, 2022

6:30 - 8:30 PM Pacific Time

This four-part class introduces the meditation of Chenrezig, the bodhisattva of compassion, which is done monthly at Santa Monica Karma Thegsum Chöling.

Lama Kathy will explain the history of the practice and how mantra and visualization can help us relate to our inner Buddha Nature and begin to manifest the qualities of compassion in our daily lives.

“The process of working with our life situation in the practice of tantric Buddhism consists first of acknowledging that one’s own basic nature is that potential, that Buddha Nature, and then meditating upon its presence within one by regarding oneself as a deity. The form of the deity is the embodiment or expression of that potential, that union of emptiness and wisdom within one. It is through regarding oneself as the deity that one’s defects are gradually eradicated, and qualities gradually revealed since the potential to transcend our problems is innate rather than external to us.”

– Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche

Finding a Balance Between Practice and Study

Teaching by Lama Adam Berner

August 25, 2022

6:30 - 8:30 PM Pacific Time

The Karma Kagyu is known as the practice lineage, and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche once said, “No one has ever studied their way to enlightenment.” Yet, we know how inspiring those “a-ha!” moments can be when something we read or hear really clicks with us. So how can we balance practice and study in order to achieve our goal of full awakening?

Under the guidance of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, Lama Adam completed a traditional Tibetan Buddhist three-year retreat in March 2020. He is now an Associate Resident Teacher at Columbus KTC Meditation Center, an affiliate chaplain at several universities, and a host of the Lama Taboot podcast. He is also developing a non-profit organization to bring secular mediation to underserved communities.

Sitting meditation is just the beginning of a spiritual journey of self-discovery that allows us to change our hearts for the better.

Lama Karma Drodhul, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and past president of our “home” monastery, Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, will show us ways we can use meditation to liberate ourselves from negative patterns, confusion, and mental afflictions.

On Friday night Aug. 19, the public talk introduces the role of mindfulness in making meaningful changes in our lives.

On Saturday and Sunday Aug. 20 and 21st, Lama Karma will teach progressive workshops that will focus on methods of self-liberation meditation.

“Zampa” means “bridge” in Tibetan. It is the name given by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche to the first newsletter linking the KTC and KTD communities. We try to carry on this tradition for the benefit of our centers and practitioners.
