As Winter Storm Fern continues to impact large areas throughout the U.S., Zoological Disaster Response, Rescue, and Recovery (ZDR3) is staying closely engaged as conditions develop and is prioritizing safety, clear communication, and readiness. Prolonged events like this often unfold over days or weeks, and our goal is to move steadily and responsibly as conditions evolve.
Because many of you may be in or near projected impact areas, we want to clearly acknowledge that your personal safety—and the safety of your staff, animals, and facilities—comes first. We understand your own operations and families may be directly affected. When and if you are able, a brief update (even to note that your team is unavailable due to local conditions) is incredibly helpful and just as valuable as indicating availability.
Operational Reminders
- Any deployment will occur only after roads are safe to travel and conditions allow responsible movement.
- In past ice and winter storm events, missions often began days or even weeks after the initial impact.
- Support teams may deploy from many directions, not only neighboring regions.
-
Indicating potential availability does not obligate participation, it simply supports planning.
There is no expectation to place response work above your own safety or the stability of your facility. We deeply appreciate your transparency and professionalism.
Crew Lead Corner
This section is for individuals who currently serve as crew leads, have served in the past, or support management-level response decisions.
Crew leads help ZDR3 understand:
- Where response capacity may exist
- Where limitations are present
- What timelines are realistic following major weather events
Please ensure you are connected via WhatsApp for real-time coordination and safety updates.
If you are not currently included, email admin@zdr3.org and we will add you.
If you have not yet completed the Crew Lead Survey, we encourage you to do so. It helps us:
- Understand capacity and constraints
- Identify potential support needs
- Improve coordination during prolonged incidents
For Teams Who May Be Available
If you have indicated potential availability or requested information about possible needs, thank you. Your willingness to support the ZDR3 Network is deeply appreciated. We will follow up directly if and when conditions develop that require safe coordination.
Safety Spotlight: Alternate Heat Sources
As power disruptions continue in some areas, please take extra care when using alternate heat sources:
-
Do not use generators or heaters that emit carbon monoxide in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.
- Clean heaters before use to prevent dust ignition.
- Avoid loose or damaged outlets.
- Inspect cords for fraying or wear.
- Keep heaters clear of bedding, hay, and flammable materials.
- Do not overload outlets or power strips.
- Ensure extension cords can handle the electrical load and do not create trip hazards.
- Prevent cords from entering enclosures or being accessed by animals.
- Check equipment frequently if running continuously.
Small precautions can prevent fires, injuries, and life-threatening exposures.
If You Need Assistance
Call or text 304-933-9373 (ZDR3) This does not replace 911 or local emergency services. Requests must come from a Director, owner, or designee.
Please also email or text details to RequestSupport@zdr3.org so we can better assess your situation and needs. Continue to notify appropriate local emergency and regulatory agencies as required.
We will continue sharing updates focused on safety, situational awareness, and responsible readiness. Your care, communication, and professionalism strengthen the entire network.
