Get ready to BYOP – Bring Your Own Phone – to a whole new, groundbreaking style of text bank! We're piloting this versionThursday, 8/12, at 4p PT, and we’ll be registering new Democrats and urging them to vote NO on the Republican-funded California Recall.
Unless we get massive blue turnout, California could end up with some random D-List Celeb as Governor – who could get the chance to replace Dianne Feinstein with a Republican, thereby costing us the Senate majority. Plus, Gavin Newsom has done a dang good job: 65% of Californians vaccinated with one dose, eviction protections, free universal Pre-K, a rebounding economy, $458 million for fire prevention, and more.
So BYOP – we’ll train you to save Newsom, and democracy in general, with nothing more than a text from your computer, using your data plan. Our game-changing goal is the ability to text without having to raise money for expensive texting software. But full disclosure: we’re still working out the kinks. This “pay what you can” textbanking uses slightly awkward technology. So if you’re at all tech-challenged, talk a tech-savvy friend into coming with you.

WONDER DEMOCRACY POWERS... ACTIVATE!
Field Team 6 is thrilled to shout out our continuing partnership with Activate22. We partnered last year (when they were known as Activate 2020!) and they played a crucial role in our registration efforts to flip Arizona blue! This homegrown community of enthusiastic volunteers uses data-driven strategies to register new voters in order to protect our democracy and save (and expand) our House and Senate majorities in 2022!
This year our Activated friends have handwritten 30,000 postcards to unregistered likely Democrats in Arizona and Texas. Now we are joining forces to raise the $3,000 needed to textbank these same folks — confident that more "touches" will produce a higher rate of new registrations. Please check them out at Activate22.com and consider helping fund these efforts in Texas and Arizona... both critical states for a Blue 2022!

Voting rights advocate, published Op-Ed author, and recent Field Team 6 volunteer of the week, Valerie Morishige, will be walking thirty lucky folks through the ins & outs of writing citizen Op-Eds to influence politicians and bring about positive policy changes.

VOLUNTEER SHOUT-OUT: FIONA MAJEAU
|
|
This week, we’re shouting out Fiona Majeau, a volunteer Tech Developer. For the past two years, she’s done incredibly complex and cool things for Field Team 6, like coding our voter registration database and the just-announced, game-changing Field Team 6 Impact Map (see above) that shows where your help is needed most!
Before going digital, Fiona got her start with Field Team 6 at in-person voter registration events. “While awkwardly approaching strangers on the Huntington Beach Pier with a clipboard was certainly a self-growth moment for me, you probably wouldn't have enjoyed watching it.” Then she saw in the newsletter – this very newsletter! – that tech developers were needed. “I was super happy to find a way to contribute that felt more aligned with my skill set.”
Fiona was inspired to get active and volunteer with FT6 to help battle the inequality and abuses of power she sees in our country. “I am privileged to have time, energy, and education, and want to use those things to contribute to change in whatever small ways I can. The importance of voting was always emphasized in my family, and that belief in political activism has only grown as I've gotten older.”
Fiona has a Bachelors and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford, with a focus on energy systems modeling. She works in the energy industry for a firm that invests in electricity markets.
When she imagines the future of America, she’d like it to be “...as much like The Great British Bake Off as possible, I think. People are respected as complex individuals, help is freely given and received based on need, and representation is diverse. And we all say things like ‘that was a good result’ and eat small beautiful cakes.” That future cannot come soon enough!
Fiona loves being active outdoors, singing, going to craft fairs, and hanging with family and friends. She fuels it all with her favorites: coffee and brownies. And the causes she’s most passionate about? Mental health and climate change. Specifically, she’d like to see our energy infrastructure decarbonized. Amen to that.

LET'S KEEP THINGS BLUE!
A magical thing happened in CA-49 in 2018, when Democrat Mike Levin was elected to Congress, replacing the loathsome Darrell Issa. Rep. Levin fought for the environment, clean energy and other progressive causes, and ably won reelection in 2020.
But now Congressman Levin's blue district needs protecting! Redistricting (California is losing a House seat, people!) means his seat may be an even harder win in 2022. So we need to protect this new blue stronghold in the upcoming midterms. The best way to do that? Register every Democrat in the district!
We're looking to raise just $1,027 to start standing up digital voter registration efforts in the district. That means buying the data of unregistered likely Dems so we can set up phone banks and postcarding campaigns to get them registered. If you have the means to contribute, please do so HERE.
