FEATURED ARTIST

ROSIE CARTER

Rosie's art will be featured in the Meeting & Makerspace August 5-31

Artist Rosie Carter works in the realm of nostalgia, in that dreamlike place where the familiar bumps up against the strange. It’s a place of history and of myths, of real places and make-believe people, permeated with sunshine and a sweet, oddly familiar tune playing softly in the background.

Working out of her studio at the Road X Complex, a 1947 metal quonset hut in Yellow Jacket, Colorado, she is surrounded by the remote high desert country of the Four Corners. It’s a place of wide skies and high-flying flocks of birds, a place of magical landscapes and secret hideouts. And it’s place where people have a history of resilience and devotion: Native Americans with their homelands, pioneers with their homesteads, farmers and ranchers with their fields and range.

In this place Rosie gathers up scraps from the past – inspiration comes from the land and landscape, materials from salvaged metal and wire, ideas from vintage artifacts – and spins them into new objects that express a lovely and slightly off kilter combination of the wistful and the weird.

INSIDERS

The Final 12

We had over 100 furry babies come to our Open Call for our first Montezuma Mutts Calendar! Thanks to a group of 12 judges (not bribed) the final 12 were selected for a photo session to take place around Montezuma County to help show off our beautiful area. We will have a reveal party in October with discounted pre-sales starting in September. Every dog who came to the call will be included in the calendar. Keep an eye out...if you wanted to include your Montezuma Mutt but missed the call you may still have a chance to be included. Stay tuned!

Community Minded Artists

We are so proud to host amazing Montezuma County artists and are even more tickled when we see them out in the community doing good things.

Sarah Combs Wright and her son decided to start walking dogs around Cortez from Denkai Thrift Store & Pet Adoptions. She gives them a break from their kennel and takes the extra step of getting a photo of them and giving a description of their temperament on her Instagram account.

Off the Wall

Thank you for supporting Tim O'Brien with his first featured show at the ZU. If you missed his show, we still have a nice selection of his pieces available. Except for one...

Tim happened to be in the gallery for the 48 Hour Film Project... (we'll share those details next month)

A young man and his Auntie came in to admire the art and were so struck by Tim's work that even though they couldn't afford the piece, they asked if he would let them take a photo of him with the art piece. He gladly obliged and then took the piece off the wall and immediately gifted it to them! So Cool! We are so humbled to share this space with such awesome humans.
