Zeal - Time To Get Enthused!

Greetings!

Happy October to everyone! As we go pumpkin hunting, and as the leaves begin to change colors, we celebrate Life's transitions, while holding firm to the changeless Truth within all in the manifest realm of form.

Are you celebrating the changes you are observing in the world? Are you perhaps mourning what has passed, yearning for "what might have been," or are you simply feeling "stuck in the middle"? Unity of Columbus welcomes you, wherever you are in this human journey.

October is the month for Zeal, the tenth of the Unity Twelve Powers. In short, Zeal is that inner flame that ignites our dreams, motivates us to get ourselves moving, and inspires us to spiritual enthusiasm for life and living. We all have the same access to this "sparkplug" of Zeal - we need only accept what we have been given, then put it into regular practice.

The color for this month is orange, the part of the body associated with Zeal is the medulla oblongata, and the disciple is Simon the Canaanite, also known as Simon the Zealot. (Metaphysically, he represents motivation, the impulse to accomplish great things.)

Time to get excited about Life! Now is your time to begin anew - launch a new project, complete something you may have left "on the shelf," or do something a bit outside your comfort zone.

I'll share with you, dear readers, one of my favorite quotes, which has been attributed to the German playwright and philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:

Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute:

What you can do, or dream you can, begin it;

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

Only engage and then the mind grows heated;

Begin and then the work will be completed.

We've got a lot going on at our Unity center this fall! Take a look here, and on our calendar for all the details! We'll see you on Sunday, friends!

Gratefully yours,

Daryn L. Wells, LUT

Editor-In-Chief

"Seeds Of Spirit"

New YFM Curriculum

by Dr. Kristine L. Pass

From Daryn L. Wells, LUT - Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator:

About a year ago, I was recommended a new Youth and Family curriculum by a former UOC congregant, Rev. Dr. Kristine L. Pass, who wrote the material, songs, and activities for children and teens. I am so excited to now offer "Seeds Of Spirit" to our young Truth students! There are songs, games, and activities jam-packed into each lesson, and I am confident your young ones will enjoy it - and the opportunities for fellowship and spiritual development the program offers!

What's "Seeds Of Spirit" about?

From Kristine:

"Seeds of Spirit is designed to nurture Presence, Purpose, and Peace within children using Unity/New Thought principles. As Proverbs reminds us, 'Teach a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.'

"My heart is to help children establish these spiritual truths early so they can grow up already grounded in love and awareness—without having to first “unlearn” limiting beliefs many of us picked up along the way."

Your kids / grandkids are lovingly invited to the launch of this new school year - and this new adventure, "Seeds Of Spirit!"

The Doctor Is IN!
A Feature Article Series

By Pam Cobb, MD

"Oh, My Aching Back!" (Part Three)

Many patients are able to avoid surgery by core strengthening and medication. 50% of ruptured (herniated) discs will heal in 6 months. However sometimes surgery is the only available option. Surgery is done to decompress the nerves or stabilize the spine with the two most common procedures being discectomy and laminectomy+fusion.

When to consider back surgery:

——when all reasonable non-surgical options have been exhausted

——when the back pain starts to worsen in spite of treatment

——when leg pain develops or persists

It is typically advisable to seek a second opinion in cases of non emergency back pain. (Loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency and should be evaluated in the ER)

Post-operatively, watch for:

——continued bloody or purulent drainage

——fever

—-worsening weakness or paralysis

—- leg pain or swelling (can be signs of a blood clot)

-—constipation (typically induced by opiate pain medication)

—-low blood pressure (can be a sign of blood loss or reaction to the

   anesthesia)

In Unity, we believe strongly in the healing power of prayers and positive affirmations. Check out the pamphlet: When Someone You Love Needs Healing. An additional prayer resource is Silent Unity.

Dr Pam Cobb is a family practitioner based in Columbus. Currently she works for both Signify Health and AbsoluteCare and is a supervisory physician for Black Olive healthcare. She is a board member for Unity of Columbus.
