Zimbabwe Water Project
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
I am excited! My hometown of Zvishavane, in Zimbabwe, has struck water! Well, almost. We are so close we can taste it.
For my whole life, water has been carried from distant wells and riverbeds. Many sources are often dry. Drought is a way of life that has impacted my people’s health and even our ability to survive. Much of a family’s time and energy goes to merely subsisting. In this patriarchal society, women and children feel the pain of fetching water from distant places. It is difficult to grow food with no rain and no ability to irrigate.
About two years ago, I began working with my American friend – who once visited us and experienced harsh conditions in this community – to drill a well in my village. A few well-wishers and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rochester gave generously, enabling us to drill three times, which resulted in two dry holes and one very low capacity well. That all changed on October 2nd, when a new hydrologist with expertise in arid and semi-arid areas discovered an abundant water supply right in the middle of the village!
