Zimbabwe Water Project

Brothers and sisters in Christ,
I am excited! My hometown of Zvishavane, in Zimbabwe, has struck water! Well, almost. We are so close we can taste it.

For my whole life, water has been carried from distant wells and riverbeds. Many sources are often dry. Drought is a way of life that has impacted my people’s health and even our ability to survive. Much of a family’s time and energy goes to merely subsisting. In this patriarchal society, women and children feel the pain of fetching water from distant places. It is difficult to grow food with no rain and no ability to irrigate.

About two years ago, I began working with my American friend – who once visited us and experienced harsh conditions in this community – to drill a well in my village. A few well-wishers and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rochester gave generously, enabling us to drill three times, which resulted in two dry holes and one very low capacity well. That all changed on October 2nd, when a new hydrologist with expertise in arid and semi-arid areas discovered an abundant water supply right in the middle of the village!
The hole is dug, but further work is needed to complete our work. We have yet to install a solar electric pumping system, a concrete foundation around the well, and two 500-liter water tanks on a 5-meter platform. The well cannot be used until these finishing touches are completed. The villagers know that water is close, yet they still must walk 3 to 4 miles to obtain daily needs. And Zimbabwe’s summer growing season will soon be upon us. The need is urgent! The installation contractor is ready to mobilize.

At present there is only $3,300 left in the well fund. We seek an additional $5,500 to provide a well that will sustain the village’s domestic cooking, drinking, and hygiene needs. Any raised beyond $8,800 will be used to fence and irrigate the communal land that is set aside for a community garden.

If you feel moved to assist in this final push to bring life-giving water to Zvishavane, we would welcome your financial support.
Thank you for interest,

Gracious Moyo
