Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that zinc supplementation may help reduce the risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in middle-aged or older adults, especially among those with cataracts?

Bonnie Minsky Award Winner 2023-2024

We are very pleased to introduce the recipient of this year’s UIC School of Public Health Bonnie C. Minsky scholarship, Joanna Paul.

Joanna is a joint MPH and MSW student, enrolled in the School of Public Health’s Division of Community Health Sciences, with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health. During her time at UIC, Joanna has worked for the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health, supporting staff and faculty on a variety of administrative and research projects. Joanna also co-led the Steering Group for the Maternal and Child Health Interest Group, helped plan the SPH Spring Symposium, served as an Advocacy Board Member for the Maternal and Child Health National Network, and interned for the Illinois Policy Team at Start Early.

When informed that she received this generous award, Joanna noted that the funds “will help to reduce my financial stress and allow me to dedicate more of my time and energy to my studies. Because I will graduate with minimal student loans, I will be able to pursue professional work that aligns with my values of supporting vulnerable communities instead of sacrificing the work I am passionate about in favor of a higher salary.”

After graduating next spring, Joanna, who is interested in early childhood policy, advocacy, and research, hopes to work for a non-profit organization in Chicago that will allow her to improve childcare access and prevent trauma among vulnerable children and families. Joanna plans to become licensed as a social worker and engage in clinical practice with similar populations to advance health equity and social justice.

Infection Support

For Prevention or During Infection

Year-round infection is the new normal. We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in later December 2023.

Diet, Lifestyle, & Supps Boost Memory

Steve: There has been incredible research over the last few months with regard to memory prevention and therapy.

Supplements *please do not self-supplement

A study from Nutrients found that probiotics enhanced positive expression of the BDNF gene, ameliorating inflammation and oxidative stress in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients.

Researchers in Alzheimer's & Dementia purport that higher brain vitamin D3 concentrations were associated with better cognitive function prior to death in older adults.

A study from Nutrients suggests guayusa and lion's mane mushroom extract may improve measures of cognition in adults, but there are widely varying degrees of quality, efficacy, and safety of these extracts.

New research from Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found these five nutrients were strikingly lower in the brains of those with Alzheimer's disease: lycopene, lutein, retinol (vitamin A), vitamin E, and zeaxanthin.

A study from Nutrients found that low mineral intake, especially magnesium, was associated with cognitive impairment and lower cognitive test scores. Another study from Nutrients suggests AD patients are strongly associated with lower selenium concentrations compared with healthy people.

Diet & Lifestyle

Regular moderate to vigorous physical activity leads to larger brain size in key regions, including gray and white matter and the hippocampus, new data from Journal of Alzheimer's Disease suggests.

A new study in Heliyon has revealed that elderly individuals engaging in digital puzzle games can exhibit memory capacities comparable to those in their 20s.

An Annals of Internal Medicine study found that people who practiced a simplified form of tai chi called Tai Ji Quan twice a week for about six months improved their Montreal Cognitive Assessment score by 1.5 points. This increase may not sound like a lot, but the study author says "you've basically given yourself three extra years" of staving off decline.

Case Report

DEXA Scan Shocker

Bonnie: A 73 year-old female came in to see me three years ago presenting with a broken ankle and osteoporosis in her lower back.

She was consuming gluten even though she was intolerant to it. So we agreed that she would go off gluten until her next DEXA scan.

I also put her on a targeted supplement plan to address bone formation, resorption, and reduce inflammation.

Moreover, I suggested that she consistently perform weight-bearing exercise.

This month, I received an email from her saying, "I just received the results of my dexascan and learned that my bone density increased 9.1%. This is without fosamax or any other medication!"

Chiro Corner NEW!

Chiropractic Helps With Cerebral Palsy

The December 2023 Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, Chiropractic presented the case of a baby who suffered lack of oxygen for 30 minutes at birth. He was in the hospital for 18 days and diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

His parents were told that he might be wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. At 3 and a half weeks old he was brought in for chiropractic care. The technique was a gentle and sustained hold at his tailbone, upper neck and head.

He remained in care for five years, progressing from twice a week to once a week and then to once per month. He also underwent physical therapy sessions at home with his mother. The little boy can now walk, talk and function as a normal child with slight developmental delays and he is not wheelchair bound.

It’s amazing what the body can do when there is a better balance within the nervous system. That’s why it’s important for adults and children to be checked regularly for spinal subluxations. Chiropractic makes sure that all systems and nerve signals are working properly, for positive changes to occur. What health condition are you ready to let Chiropractic care help you with?
