Zinnias are rivaled only by Sunflowers for easy-to-grow, jumbo flowers that inspire happy amazement. It's almost miraculous that we can grow such floral abundance from itty bitty seeds.
Zinnias are a must in cutting gardens. What's a homegrown bouquet without them? You don't need a holiday or a birthday as an excuse to make someone's day. If you fill your garden with Zinnias, you can give a friend, a neighbor, or even your favorite hair stylist, delivery person or barista a bouquet, just for fun, on any random day.
There's no need to pull out the grow lights to grow a big patch of Zinnias. The seeds can be sown directly into a prepared garden bed anytime after the last spring frost.
Zinnias love full sun and rich, well-drained soil. After sowing, keep the soil moist until seedlings emerge, then thin the seedings to encourage good air flow. Deadhead regularly to encourage more flowers. Zinnias attract fluttering butterflies in droves, but deer tend to ignore them!
