Continuing from Matthew's account of Zechariah:

"as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us;
to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days."

Do you ever stop to consider if buying all of this stuff is ever really worth it? My daughter's computer came with a three-year "everything" plan which covers everything from defects to spills to drops.  What it didn't cover was "aggressive use". Aggressive use?! What in the world is that?  It turns out that if you close the lid (the hinge of which deteriorated over time) too many times or too quickly and the screen breaks, you have been "too aggressive".  This resulted in a series of phone calls and emails spanning more than five weeks. I am not kidding you. She even called to enlist my support, which is telling for a 20-year-old who has traveled widely on her own and can charm a chicken into laying a western omelet!  Together, we approached the supervisor, laying at his feet the concerns and the needs in our situation. He listened and said, "I think we can help. I'm not convinced it wasn't aggressive use, which is not covered by this policy. However, I have a way to help you." And help us he did!  The company has since reworded things to encourage people to send their equipment in when hinges start to loosen, etc. They have a whole new plan and Emma has a whole new laptop. Wow.

We think we have things covered in our lives, as well.  We have a place to live, an income of some sort, we have some savings, health insurance, life insurance, and probably even a retirement plan.  We have an "everything plan". I'm a good person who does good things with good effort. I'm good. God honors that and all will be well. The "everything plan" will work.

Life shows otherwise:  Death, pain, sickness, conflict, frustration, miscommunication, unkindness, and selfishness all creep into our "good" lives.  We are not "good", no matter how wonderful our plans seem to be. Scripture mirrors this when in Psalm 14 the poet is inspired to write

The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
   to see if there are any who understand,
   who seek after God.
They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
   there is none who does good,
   not even one.

We need a new plan.  We need a supervisor, a Heavenly Father, who listens to us when we call upon Him for help.  We can't change the outcome of sin, which is death (Ephesians 6:23a). God, however, can change the outcome, because He is all of creation's ultimate supervisor.  He listened to our need with His heart. He gave us an example of answering a need with supreme sacrifice, His son's life for ours.  He gave us a new start in Christ Jesus by the resurrection of His Son. Through His Word and the water of baptism, we are assured of His irrevocable grace.   Truly we are saved and "delivered from our enemies"...by God who came to us in a baby whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas.
