Curriculum Corner:
What does STEM, STEAM, or STREAM mean, exactly?

STEM:  Science, Technology, Engineering, Math
STEAM:  Same as above, but the second-to-last letter stands for "Arts"
STREAM: Same as above, but the third letter is "Robotics"

Since 2013 many schools have started to shift toward using something called, Next Generation Science Standards, which  "are rich in content and practice and arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally-benchmarked science education" (, March 2019) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards.  This means that our children are doing more than learning the "scientific method" and doing a lab  realted to it.  Instead, they are using science thinking, practices (what scientists do), and do so in a way that is meaningful, organized, follows a logical progression, and which builds a set of skills with embedded knowledge through which our students will be "college or career ready" once they graduate from high school.

Gone, dear families, are the days when children simply learned "readin', writin', and ' rithmetic".  They now need to learn how to use information effectively, think about information critically, work with others around information (and resultant thinking), construct new knowledge, and use various tools to communicate with others around them (e.g. video, slide shows, animation, podcasts)

Zion Partners with Orange Lutheran High School

Zion is pleased to partner with Orange Lutheran High School to provide award-winning, nationally recognized online learning opportunities for our Seventh and Eighth Grade students.
Foreign Languages 1 & 2 (e.g. French, Chinese/Mandarin, and Spanish), Algebra 1 (full-year), and Geometry 1 (full-year).  Also starting this fall, eligible students will be welcome to register for these "enrichment" classes, which will complement other courses being developed this spring and summer.  Some of our courses will be offered over a quarter, while others will be a semester or year-long course.  For example, Handbells will be a year-long course while a course temporarily known as "Media Arts" will be held for a quarter.  We are thrilled to be able to offer these opportunities to enrich our students' 21st Century skills, while at the same time hitting Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), California Standards (various content areas), and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Students (and, frankly, Teachers!).  We are working quickly to better understand the role of these standards in our current curriculum and which courses offered by OLu will also meet these standards, while also adding appropriate courses to support student learning.  Rejoice!
