Worship and Fellowship Opportunities this Month

Wednesday Night Live + Resumes January 8th

We hope you’ll join us at 5:45pm each Wednesday for a fellowship meal and stick around for faith formation for all ages from 6:30-7:30pm. A great meal and learning time with great people!

Fill the Pack 5k - January 18th

to support Zion's Snack Pack Program

Get ready for a fun race to benefit Zion Lutheran Church's "Snack Pack" program which provides food for needy students at Oak Grove Elementary.

The 5k course is a loop around the beautiful River Bluff campus, allowing competitors to walk and run over bridges and nature paths, beginning and ending in our state-of-the-art football stadium, The Swamp! This also allows athletes to pass aid stations every 1 mile and spectators to be able to see their runners. This is a USATF-certified course.

We are looking forward to an AMAZING race day. Thanks for your support! Remember to have fun, stay safe, and give it your all!

This race is part of the Eagle Scout project of Will Cohoon, Life Scout at Troop 425 at Zion Lutheran Church.

From the Pastor's Desk

As January rolls around again, two things are as certain as death and taxes. First, the church will be talking about the star that shines bright on Epiphany. Second, there will be many ads on your TVs and phones and everywhere else trying to convince you that it’s time to lose weight, look younger, or improve yourself in some other way with their help.

What does that star have to tell us about those ads? The light that gathered the Wise Men to the newborn Jesus shone for the whole world to see. The star was a symbol of the Light that had come into the world, as John 1 says. In that light, we are all changed.

In Isaiah 43, God tells the people, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine… you are precious in my sight and honored and I love you.” On the cross, Jesus dies for each of us and all of us. God knows us fully and loves us fully, before we are even born. God claims us in baptism, often when we are too young to have done anything right or wrong yet.

In the light of God’s star, your age, your weight, your height, your hair color, and the whiteness of your teeth don’t matter at all. In God’s light, you shine like the moon. You shine with the light of God that reflects off of you. You shine because God says you do.

If you want to change your life, go for it. There are lots of ways and opportunities in this newsletter and around the world. But don’t do it because you think you have to. Do what you do—and avoid what you avoid—because of the light God shines.

Maybe God is calling you, in this season, to take a deep breath. Maybe you have been glittering like a disco ball and need some time to recharge. I hope Zion can be a place for you to do that. Maybe you’re ready for a new beam to shine. If you’d like some suggestions on how to sparkle more brightly, I invite you to pray your way through this newsletter. What makes you more curious? Where do you feel a tug to get involved? Who is God nudging you to notice? See where your gifts line up with the world’s needs. I promise, God has a place for you. God has a light for you to shine.

In God’s Radiance,

Pastor Emily

Youth Annual Christmas Caroling

Hilltoppers: Zion's Retiree Group

Hilltoppers will meet Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. We will enjoy learning more about one another with our popular “Show and Tell” program. You are invited to bring a memento or photo to share with others its special meaning.  More stories will likely be heard around the tables as we enjoy a potluck lunch after the program. All are welcomed as fellowship and sharing have no age restrictions.

Project Christmas Cards. Again, during January, we will be collecting your used Christmas cards. The project was very successful for the 2024 Thanksgiving Meal inserts. Over 700 cards were repurposed into Zion Thanksgiving greetings to meal recipients. Look for a designated drop box in the FLC through the end of January.
