From the Pastor's Desk

On October 4, the ELCA will install our fifth Presiding Bishop, Rev. Yehiel Curry. Bishop Curry was serving as the bishop of the Metro Chicago Synod when he was elected to be Presiding Bishop on July 30. Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, who served as the ELCA’s fourth Presiding Bishop, has retired after two terms in that office.

One of the things that our new Presiding Bishop is passionate about is developing leaders in the ELCA. His own call to ministry came as a lay mission developer at first. He entered the role of pastor through a program called Theological Education for Emerging Ministries, which helps prepare rostered leaders for specific places across the ELCA. Bishop Curry’s Master of Divinity was earned at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

In his first address to the 2025 Churchwide Assembly, Bp. Curry said, “I’m what a return on your investment looks like,” he told the assembly. “Perhaps I’m out there in one of you. I never saw myself as good enough, so for two years, I said no. I finally said yes. When I said yes, your support, this church’s support, of that ministry meant everything. So if you want to know what your benevolence dollars look like, it looks like me. And I want to say thank you. Thank you for your investment.”

God surprises us with calls at different times in our lives. Bishop Curry worked in sales and education, before becoming a leader in his congregation and then in the larger church. Supporting him and other lay leaders, deacons, and pastors means the financial support and institutional support of having seminaries and assisting students with costs. It also means having people who help discern calls. That can be everything from a friend or pastor who encourages a person, to the synod office that guides the process, and formal and informal mentors along the way.

Being the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA is a huge role. The ELCA is urban and rural and includes people from many different perspectives. Because of the way the ELCA is structured, the Churchwide Offices can provide significant amounts of support to congregations and synods, but have very little power to enforce rules. A few weeks ago, for example, Zion hosted a stewardship workshop where two ELCA employees came to teach. The funding for that was provided by the ELCA and the synod, and what we choose to do with the information is up to the congregation. We have both independence and interdependence as congregations, synods, and churchwide expressions of the church.

I don’t know Bishop Curry personally, but I am curious. He will be in my prayers as he takes office. May God bless him with gratitude and curiosity, with energy and endurance, and above all, may he be filled with the love of God.

A Mighty Fortress

“A Mighty Fortress is Our God” is often referred to as the battle hymn of the Reformation. Though it certainly served to strengthen adherents of the new Lutheran church, scholars disagree about Luther’s actual intent when he wrote it. It is known that during that period—around 1529—Luther was experiencing multiple difficulties. Aside from the stresses and dangers brought about by his stand against the Catholic Church there was controversy among Luther’s fellow reformers. He was also experiencing ill health and personal loss. It has been suggested that he turned to Psalm 46—the Scriptural source of this celebrated hymn—for comfort. And the powerful message he found there became a source of strength he shared through musical expression.

Music was always part of Luther’s life. As a young student he sang in the choir and learned to play several instruments. As the Reformation unfolded, Luther used music as one means to teach God’s Word to lay people, basing most of his works on passages from Scripture. At that time, singing during worship was in Latin and most often by monastic choirs. Luther restored congregational singing using hymns written in or translated into the German language.

Today music remains an integral part of worship.

“A Mighty Fortress” is certainly a song of praise and victory. And that is why it is also a hymn of comfort. The lyrics assure us that no matter the challenges, God always prevails. Luther took heart knowing that nothing—neither human agency nor Satan himself—can alter the promise of eternal life given through faith in Christ.
