Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

When writing, it takes a long time for students to learn that the first draft – the sloppy copy - is often just that, a first draft.

The key to quality is often in the rewrite.

This is a lesson that even adults – especially those of us who knit & crochet-- have a hard time absorbing.

How often have you fretted over ripping out a day’s work? If only you checked your gauge first! If only you put in a lifeline in that lace wrap! Instead you decided to dive right in and give it a go only to realize – you had to start over.

So we are here to tell you, that it’s ok sometimes to just wing it. Well maybe not with a sweater, but a baby blanket using chunky instead of worsted, a scarf- go for it. As our friend Maura used to say “It’s only yarn.”

Ok, well maybe that’s going too far for those of us who have a special relationship with natural fibers, but there is a truth in the idea.

And if you don't like it? All that work was not wasted. It offered practice, and delivered calm and focus. It also gave you a chance to think about your project for the redo. It's an opportunity to learn and grow as a Maker. Maybe you'll surprise yourself with your choice to go off the pattern instructions. Tweek, invent, make it your own.
Still, let’s be clear: Sometimes you want to do first things first.

Sometimes, when you are taking on a high-effort project like a sweater, you need to slowdown, take a breath and work your gauge swatch.

Sometimes you just can’t do second things first, or if you do, be prepared for the consequences.

First things first.

Breath.

Measure.

Read through the pattern.

Talk to one of the terrific, talented team at The Blue Purl.

Then go for it.

Our aim was to go one whole newsletter without talking about the pandemic, but it seems there are life lessons here too, especially for a time like this, when we are all under strain.

Take it one step at a time.
And when things go wrong, roll with it.

Of course we couldn't help but put together some colorful kits for her latest patterns.
Mokume, just released last week, uses clever slipped stitches to create intricate colorwork that looks like ancient Japanese metalworking. We made kits with Lichen & Lace fingering and Baah La Jolla. Using a variegated Baah as the contrast color in the slipped stitches gives a stained glass effect between the solid main color.

We love the combination of striping and lace in the Linway shawl. And being reversible makes it a versatile accessory! Check out our kits online in Lichen & Lace fingering, Baah La Jolla and Koigu for stripes.
My Softer Side, another release from last week uses 2 strands of silk mohair to create a lacy, elegant ponchette/cowl. We love it with Tynn Silk Mohair which has a touch of wool blended into the silk mohair.
Wove is worked in a soft airy aran weight such as Katia Cotton-Merino blend. If you've seen this yarn in person, you know it feels like holding a cloud but knitted up, it gives you so much warmth. The texture of Wove looks complicated but is just knits & purls. We also love this in Sandnes Garn Kos held with Tynn Silk Mohair.

What's New?
Two Tendrils
Two Tendrils is Jennifer Weissman's latest pattern, freshly released on Wednesday. Two beautiful cables run up the side of this warm and generously sized cowl to make an accessory that will stand out in the dreariest winter day. Tam test knitted this with just 1 skein of Kelbourne Lucky Tweed on a size US 9 needle. It took her 2 days-- quick knitted gifts to knock off your list, anyone? Want a thicker version, use 2 skeins of Woolfolk Luft on a size 10 needle. The pattern is 25% off in Ravelry until 9/22 and yes, it will be at the Zoom trunk show!
Pressed Flowers Kits
We can't stop admiring this shawl every time we see it. Pressed Flowers just looks like a fun knit and the color combinations are endless. We added a few kits made from Fibre Co.'s Arranmore Light & Peace Fleece DK. All kits are online but feel free to make your own color combo with 2 skeins of each color, available under DK weight yarns online.
Miura Cowl
The Miura Cowl by Olga Buraya-Kefelian is now in our shop. Antonia Shankland (another lovely designer) knitted this with 1 skein of mYak Tibetan Cloud on a US 5 needle & made 12 repeats of the pattern to get a more generous size. Check out the sample on your next visit.
Hat Kits!
New hat kits are in stock online. Perfect as a gift or to make a gift! Each kit comes with the Pull the Wool Over hat pattern, 1 skein of Lichen & Lace hand dyed worsted, 1 ball of Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair & 1 coordinating faux fur pom pom. The hardest part of this project is picking your colors.
Pom Pom Magazine & 52 Weeks of Socks
The latest issue of Pom Pom Quarterly will be here on Tuesday 9/22. We only have a few copies of this season's issue. It's definitely sweater weather with lots of beautiful patterns to set you up for the season. Call/email us to get your copy.

52 Weeks of Socks is back in stock. These sold out so fast back in February. (Can anyone remember February, pre-Covid? That feels like years ago.) Call/email us to get your copy.
Blue Sky 2020 Collection
The Blue Sky 2020 Trunk show is at The Blue Purl. We have 3 beautiful sweaters and 2 gorgeous wraps in the house for a few weeks. The Pemberton Pullover is a textured unisex sweater worked in Woolstok. The Lauderdale sweater is both an airy & warm top worked in Extra. The Seven Sisters Top is one of our favorites from the summer, worked in Organic Printed Cotton. The Holland Wrap is Wendy's favorite WIP right now, using Extra. The Worthington Wrap is perfect for advanced beginners to practice basic stitches while working on a textured wrap in Organic Cotton and Organic Printed Cotton.

Wendy & Tam are considering the men's version of the Pemberton for their husbands. Anyone want to join them? We could have a virtual parade of Blue Purl partners in Pembertons!

These yarns are all available in our online shop, but call/email us if you need more quantities than listed.
At the register
We have these little quick knit Washcloth & Spa Cloth kits put together next to the register. Yiba knitted them up and wrote out the pattern :) A ball of GGH Bellina 80%cotton 20%nylon terry-like yarn will make 2 cloths.
CROCHET AWAY
d'Histoire Naturelle Scheepjes CAL 2020 by designer Christina Hadderingh is starting this upcoming week on Sept. 23. It's not just a Crochet-a-long but a read along also...

"The design for this spectacular crocheted blanket is inspired by the many galleries of the breathtakingly beautiful Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Museum of Natural History) in Paris, which is highlighted in the book All The Light We Cannot See by the award-winning author, Anthony Doerr."

It's an 11 week project is designed with sport weight yarn with free pdf patterns coming out bi-weekly. Here's the blog page from Spoonful of Yarn to follow along.
Our Fabulous Community
A LITTLE COMMUNITY NEWS: Just want to let you know Keri is away the month of Nov. So if you need her for any magic before then.....
!!!! KERI !!!!
This is amazing Keri. The Wee Willie Winkie Blanket from a Nursery Rhymes book is stunning. The lights on the lamp post and the lighted windows in duplicate stitch (Christmas Stocking students!) The little houses and moons are knitted in intarsia (Bright Star students!), and the rest was stranded (Fair Isle Mitts class!) This is one lucky grandkid! And we are all lucky students. Thanks Keri!
Christmas Stocking
Mary's Christmas stocking is adorable! She said it was her practice so she put her name on it But looks pretty darn great to us! (Nice job on the duplicate stitch:) This was done in Plymouth Encore in a recent class with Keri (of the banket above.) Yay!
Donna and the Donna Poncho
Of course Donna had to make the Donna Poncho Top :) She let the yarn take front and center using Woolfolk Far. The pattern is two color and she made it one, a great choice. It's very a very simple knit with a very elegant style and drape - Eileen Fischer-y. Love it Donna!
Felted Bag Class :)
Caryn is an A student and finished her Felted Bag ahead of schedule for Liz's class! It's lovely! She was in looking for a button. Thanks for sharing!
The French Macaroon - more button love
Susan's French Macaroon in navy is fantastic! We love the astronaut button she chose for the back. BIG LOVE!
Crochet Sweater
Jen crocheted this beautiful sweater in Malabrigo Arroyo. Isn't it gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Just for fun...
Love this! Have a great week.
