B’Mitzvah Mentors Gathering

Sunday, March 5, 3-4:30pm

In-person gathering at Sha'ar Zahav

Sha’ar Zahav has a tradition of pairing Beit Sefer students who are preparing for their b’mitzvah with an adult mentor, who provides guidance as they learn their Torah portion, write their drash and discover what it means to become a b’mitzvah.

If this is something you might be interested in doing, please join new and long-time mentors at Sha’ar Zahav. For more information about the gathering or if you can’t attend but would like more information about being a mentor, please email [email protected].

From the President

The Rabbi and I, on behalf of the Va'ad, have just signed this Resolution in support of the work of the California Task Force on Reparations for African Americans. We were alerted to this Resolution through our work with the SF Black & Jewish Unity Coalition.

This Resolution is directly in line with congregational values, as expressed in our Racial Equity Plan and in Va'ad discussions during our December 4, 2022 Advance. The Racial Equity Committee also reviewed and voted to support the Resolution. Much of the rationale for support is expressed in Larry Best's drash on January 27, 2023.

As you will read in Larry's drash, Sha'ar Zahav is the first local synagogue to sign in support of this Resolution. We are proud that, though we all have more to learn, we are educated enough on racial inequity and systemic racism to understand the Jewish imperative to support the work of the CA Task Force (and of the SF Advisory Committee on Reparations for African Americans).

Jews often bless each other with the phrase “May you live to be 120!” But even if we live that long, we still need to make plans for when the time comes.

Our keynote speaker, end-of-life expert Jim Van Buskirk, will address the challenges of talking about death, and in breakout sessions we'll be exploring a range of topics including - the legal, ethical and spiritual aspects of end-of-life decisions, writing wills, making burial choices and arrangements, and talking about mourning practices.

Journey to Judaism: A Discussion Group

Facilitated by Ora Prochovnick, Rose Katz and James Carlson

Six Mondays (the last Monday of each month), starting January 30th, 7pm-8:30pm

February is the last month to join!

This discussion group will explore issues that arise for people who are considering, are in the process of, or have only recently completed, converting to Judaism. We also welcome those who have a Jewish parent (or parents), but were raised with little or no Jewish experience and are interested in exploring their connection to Judaism. This group is not an introduction to Judaism course, but rather a place to ask questions and discuss issues with others who are also on this journey. Class sessions will alternate meeting in person with meeting on Zoom. Hybrid access will not be available for the in-person sessions. For further information, click here.

The Color of Love: A Story of a Mixed Race Jewish Girl

by Marra B. Gad

Tuesday, March 21, 7:00-8:00pm on Zoom

“Jewish boys didn’t want to explain my brown skin. And Black boys could not understand or embrace my Judaism,” Marra Gad writes in her memoir. Whatever our ethnic, racial or religious background, Gad's story raises questions about how we see others, how others see us, how we see ourselves -- and how (or if) we can open ourselves to love and accept those unlike ourselves.
