Riding my bike the short 2-mile distance to beach yoga Tuesday, I called out "good morning!" to no less than 14 people as I pedaled by. Some were walking, some were biking, some were standing next to their pups waiting for the poo to happen.
Didn't cost me a thing to say a simple hello. It soars my spirits to greet strangers, whether someone says it back or not (most do).
Snippeteers, talk to people.
What if my "good morning" to that one older-stooped-over-crazily-dressed-lady-wearing-knee-socks-and-a-safari-hat-in-the-humidity, only got ONE greeting that day from another human being - and I was it? What if it made her feel really fine that a stranger passing by took a millisecond to acknowledge her presence on the street, in the town, on the planet? And what if she then said "good morning" to the next person she passed?
I will never know how the sock lady felt - or if she even cared about my greeting. Yet I am not willing to give up a chance to help make someone's day - or hour - or minute.
After an interaction with another human, and everyone goes their merry ways, we usually never know how we have affected them, do we? Did we annoy them? Make them smile? Will they later remember something we said? Remember us as kind or mean?
Pollyanna here likes to go for it (the kindness, that is.) Like I said, no sweat off my back - cost me nothing but two words.
Let's try to affect everyone in a good way today. Let's be The One who takes a bit of time to really see a person, to care, to acknowledge ... to say a simple hello.
