from the ptsa president
It's fall, y'all! Though this week's temperatures may have you fooled, Monday was the official beginning of fall. Beautiful autumn foliage, pumpkin spice lattes and Homecoming games and dances...what's not to like?

Fall is also the time of year when the Langley PTSA conducts its only membership fundraising drive for the school year. Every student, teacher and classroom benefits from your generous contributions.
Oct 1 is the deadline to ensure you receive a printed copy of this year's student directory.  Not sure if you've joined? Contact Annette Bellino at  annette.bellino@verizon.net. Remember, if your company will match funds, you can easily  double your support for Langley! Ask your HR department or email us at  ptsalangley@gmail.com.

This is a busy weekend with all the festivities on Friday and Saturday. I wish all of you a happy and safe Homecoming weekend!

~ Laura Skeen, PTSA President

saxons, did you know …
Binge drinking is the most common, costly and deadly pattern of excessive alcohol use in the country. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08 g/dL. This typically happens when men consume 5 or more drinks or women consume 4 or more drinks in about 2 hours.

As homecoming festivities approach, talk to your teen about the dangers of binge drinking. Make sure your family has a safety plan in the event your teen needs help.

Are you using technology or is technology using you? Technology is here to stay and social media is a place to connect, share and express our feelings. It is also a place of self-comparison, constant fear of missing out and a way to channel our addictive tendencies, which can be harmful for mental health.

What’s going on behind the screens? While we are more connected than ever, it’s hard to know if technology is helping us or hurting us, yet we do have a choice when it comes to managing the way we use technology.

As part of a year-long focus on social media wellness, the Safe Community Coalition , in conjunction with the PTSAs of Langley HS and McLean HS invite you to a free community showing of the compelling new IndieFlix Original Documentary LIKE :

  • Thurs, Oct 10, 7 pm-8:30 pm in the Langley HS Auditorium
  • Tues, Oct 15, 7 pm-8:30 pm in the McLean HS Auditorium

LIKE explores the social impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to educate, inspire and equip us to self-regulate. After the film, discussion will be led by Dr. Cliff Sussman, a DC-based psychiatrist and expert on helping people achieve a more balanced relationship with digital technology. This event is free and recommended for adults and students of any age who have phones.
