Flight Instructor Oral Exam Guide

Eighth Edition

ASA’s Oral Exam Guide Series is an excellent study tool for students and instructors alike. Arranged in a question-and-answer format, this comprehensive guide lists the questions most likely to be asked by evaluators during the practical exam and provides succinct, ready responses. FAA references are provided throughout for further study.

This expanded eighth edition of the Flight Instructor Oral Exam Guide includes “Fundamentals of Instructing” questions covering the subjects from the FAA’s Aviation Instructor’s Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9). Its content accounts for the latest FAA test standards, including new risk management considerations and chapters covering all Areas of Operation and Tasks. This book is the complete resource to prepare applicants for the FAA CFI Airplane checkride and is valuable as a general refresher.

ASA Essential Read

Navigating Weather

by David Ison

Weather radar information is one of the most valuable tools available to pilots to ensure safe, efficient, and comfortable flight operations. Pilots must understand how to use modern cockpit technologies and their potential flaws to avoid inadvertently getting too close to or penetrating severe weather, which could obviously have detrimental outcomes.

Add to your library

Pair Navigating Weather with the FAA's new Aviation Weather Handbook, which includes updated and consolidated information previously contained in six different advisory circulars.

Book Update

Changes to FAA handbooks can occur after the FAA publishes a new edition. ASA keeps you current by providing textbook updates when a change has been made affecting the information in your books. This March 2023 update includes Addendum A (effective 2/10/2021), Addendum B (effective 1/5/2022), and Addendum C (effective 3/1/2023) to the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25B) published in 2016.

Addendum C contains National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Recommendation A-14-109, which clarifies information on attitude indicator pitch and bank limitations.

FAA Training and Testing News

The FAA is publishing a new monthly Community Advisory to keep the aviation community informed of changes impacting FAA standards, guidance (handbooks), and testing. Be sure to subscribe to stay informed of news from our governing agency. Beginning April 24, the Private Pilot Airplane (2 hours) and Commercial Pilot Airplane (2.5 hours) knowledge exams will be 30 minutes shorter than previously. Applicants can expect to see 5 “validation questions” on their FAA Knowledge Exam, none of which will count toward their score but that will help the FAA determine if changes are needed before including the questions on the scored test.
