Active Liberation
Giving Rise to Hope in Zimbabwe
By: Jason Smith
Yet the ABCZ and ZTS continue in their mission to give rise to hope in their context.
The ZTS is a space of ecumenical openness where students are trained to be congregational leaders rooted in their communities. ZTS places a high emphasis on training pastors, one of the few seminaries training women and men, to be socially conscious with a curriculum of liberation theology and gender studies. ZTS equips chaplains, women and men, to serve in police, military and prison contexts.

Nancy Hastings Sehested,
Marked for Life: A Prison Chaplain’s Story
By: Stan Hastey
Long one of our finest preachers, Nancy Hastings Sehested now takes her place as a supremely gifted writer among us. Sehested’s new book chronicles her 13 years as a chaplain in two men’s prisons in North Carolina, the last 10 in a maximum security facility where she distinguished herself as a sensitive, no-nonsense pastor to inmates, many convicted of particularly brutal crimes.
Hers is a no sugar-coated account of life in prisons all too typical in the United States today; their brutality is confronted in gut-wrenching honesty – the brutality of the facilities themselves, that of some prison officers in confrontations with inmates, and that of bloody battles among prisoners themselves. Nor is this the chronicle of a benighted liberal making judgments from some exalted platform. Instead, it is an honest, self-reflective account of a minister who unexpectedly found herself at a crossroads in her pastoral ministry that led her into prison chaplaincy. This sensitively written book instantly takes its place as essential literature in a field long ignored, yet “ripe for harvest.”

Alliance Leader Urges Action on Mistreatment of Palestinian Children
By Rick Goodman
As Alliance members may recall, at our last Annual Meeting we adopted a statement supporting federal legislation to stop the mistreatment of Palestinian children and youth by the Israeli military. Just briefly, each year the Israeli military arrests and detains from 500 to 700 Palestinian children and youth who live in the West Bank. This practice inflicts brutality and trauma on these young people in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. In contrast, Israeli children and youth who live in the West Bank and commit violations are not detained by the military, but are subject to Israeli police.
