Flip Flops and Foot Pain.
by Meghan Raphael, PT, DPT
At db OrthoPT, summertime brings great weather, sunshine smiles and…patients complaining of foot pain. For many, summertime signals a change of footwear from spring sneakers to summer flip flops and, again for many, that can also signal a new nagging, aching pain at the bottom of their feet and heels.
But it’s summer! I want to wear those cute strappy sandals and clickity-clackity flip flops!
If your current $5 flip flops aren’t making your feet feel like a day at the beach, keep this check list in mind when shopping for your next pair of summer footwear:
Straps: Ill-fitting shoes (like flip flops) are a big contributor to impaired walking mechanics and can change the way our feet distribute and accept our body weight with each step, often leading to over-pronation or inward rolling of the foot. Choosing an option with adjustable straps for better fit can help keep the support where it needs to be (and keep those flips from flopping off your feet creating a tripping hazard).
Arch support: The arch is one of the strongest shapes in geometry and in nature, resisting the compressive forces of gravity and our body weight. However, sometimes our feet arches could use a little extra help. Flip flops or sandals with additional arch support can aid in shock absorption, help to distribute weight across the entire foot and aid alignment, and can relieve strain on sensitive tissues like the plantar fascia.
Cushioning: In addition to acting as additional shock absorption, sandals with cushioning can help reduce muscle fatigue when walking and provide increased comfort for sore feet.
