ILLINOIS ARTS COUNCIL AGENCY AND THE SPRINGFIELD AREA ARTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCE STATE POETRY OUT LOUD WINNERS
There is rhyme and reason in Poetry Out Loud’s state winners for 2022. The Illinois champion, from tiny Franklin High School, is set to compete for a $20,000 national prize in this popular recitation contest.
“I can’t believe it. I won!” was champion Cole Delaney’s immediate response when the Springfield Area Arts Council announced his name at the top of 17 regional finalists.
Last September, 28 Illinois high schools and 127 teachers began their participation in Poetry Out Loud. Statewide, 4,597 students competed in eight regions. Winners there entered the state contest this week, conducted virtually because of the lingering pandemic.
A panel of language-expert judges viewed videos in which each student recited three poems chosen from several hundred approved possibilities, some classic and some modern. Naomi Kelly from Wheaton Warrenville South High School placed second, and another student from Franklin, Thaddeus Bergschneider, was third.

Meet the new Managing Director of Oak Park Festival Theatre
Greetings!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tom Arvetis and I’m the new Managing Director of Oak Park Festival Theatre.
I’m a Chicago theatre veteran with a background in arts administration, production, directing, playwriting, and teaching. I’m an Oak Park resident, husband, father of four, and I can’t believe my good fortune at being able to make great theatre right here in my own backyard.

Mobile Makers is expanding to Boston
WE'RE GOING NATIONAL!
In 2017 our Executive Director, Maya Bird-Murphy, was sitting in a Boston Architectural College classroom working on her thesis which laid the groundwork for Chicago Mobile Makers. In 2022, Mobile Makers is teaming up with Boston Architectural College to bring accessible design workshops to Boston Area youth. We are thrilled to announce Mobile Makers Boston! You will soon see a periwinkle truck making moves around the city.
This expansion of our programming is made possible by a generous multi-year gift from Joan Shafran and Rob Haimes. We're excited to expand our impact and incredibly grateful for this meaningful support.
Follow the truck's journey from Chicago to Boston on Instagram @mobilemakers_boston and Facebook and join us for a launch week full of pop-ups this April!

3Arts wants to share news about the 3Arts Disability Culture Leadership Initiative (DCLI), an online platform created to amplify the work of Chicago-based Deaf and disabled artists and encourage prioritization of Disability Culture in programming and organizing efforts.
3Arts is a nonprofit organization that supports Chicago’s women artists, artists of color, and Deaf and disabled artists working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts.
This month, they are proud to announce the expansion of their Disability Culture Leadership Initiative, first launched in 2021, and now featuring two new video conversations with Deaf and disabled artists, an enhanced online presence, accessibility resources, and more. Participating DCLI artists are alumni from our 3Arts/Bodies of Work Residency Fellowship (begun in 2014), a program centered on the creation of new work, professional development, and advocacy for Disability Art & Culture for up to four Deaf and disabled artists each year.
They invite you to learn more about this initiative and these artists, and we hope you may be inspired to share this work with other colleagues and advocates.

The National Museum of Mexican Art is pleased to present Surrounding Kahlo: Works from the Permanent Collection, opening on Saturday, March 5th in the Rubin & Paula Torres Gallery.
Undoubtedly, the visage of Frida Kahlo has become the most instantly recognizable of all artists across time. Since her popularization in the 1980’s, she has been the subject of books, movies, an opera and a great deal of visual art created by others who have been moved by her paintings and life story. Drawn entirely from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibit explores works inspired by Frida Kahlo; the work of her students, known as “Los Fridos,” who learned from and surrounded her while she recovered at home in La Casa Azul; as well as familiar items that Kahlo chose to surround herself with such as arte popular, Mesoamerican artifacts and traditional clothing from her beloved Mexico.
Save the Date: The Museum will host a special opening reception on Friday, April 1st from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. More info here.

Give an old instrument new life by donating it to PING!
Your instrument donation helps us ensure that all of our students get their first choice of instrument when they sign up in the fall. When you donate an instrument to PING!, we repair it or tune it up as needed, so that it is ready to put in a student’s hands. So don’t let that unused instrument sit in the closet any longer.
This year, we especially need the following instruments:
Small violas (12 inch, 13 inch, 14 inch)
3/4 violins
Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)
Saxophones
Any step-up or intermediate level instrument (brass or woodwind)

Dear Singer,
There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in
December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers. We have presented a number of world and local premiers of works by major composers. I invite you to visit our website at mtsingers.org to learn more about the ensemble and that you consider joining us for the coming season.
Interested singers can contact me directly via phone or email, so that I can answer questions and give additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Teolis
Artistic Director

POD Learning at The Actors Garden Begins in September
As you know by now, many school districts are going fully virtual in the fall in the interest of the health and safety of all concerned. The Actors Garden is offering theatre-enhanced pod-learning in our space.
This would involve small, self-contained groups that will only interact with other members of the group, while following all appropriate guidelines (masks, distance, etc.) The advantages we can offer are the ability for parents to drop their children off where they will have support and supervision throughout the day, much-needed socialization with other students, and a certain level of academic assistance when needed. We also have robust internet service, provide technical support, and can possibly offer computer rental so you don't have to purchase another device. During break times we would offer theatre activities and do as many things outdoors as we could. Indoors, we would be following correct protocols and we would keep doors and windows open as much as the weather permits. For More information contact gigi@theactorsgarden.com.

Cole Degenova has a new single, Voice of Birds, a collab with Lucas Ellman
"Voice of Birds" is out today! It was a remote collab with my high school friend Lucas Ellman in 2020 during quarantine.
Magazine Under The Radar premiered it yesterday, writing, "Ellman’s chilled beats and production flourishes form the song’s foundation, but DeGenova injects warmth and soul, capturing the gentle springtime joy found in falling in love."
This song brought Lucas and me some hope and optimism in 2020, and we hope it helps to jumpstart your spring. Finally, shout out to my wife Courtney Cintrón for creating the artwork!

Entering its 35th consecutive year, the National Arts Action Summit is the only national event designed to bring together a broad cross-section of America’s cultural and civic organizations to underscore the importance of developing strong public policies and increased public funding for arts and culture. There has never been a better time to join us at the National Arts Action Summit because this year, we're taking our advocacy efforts to the next level by making it free for partner organizations and individuals to attend.
Join us virtually from March 28-30, 2022, for three days of networking with other arts advocates from across the country, deep-dive conversations about how to work more effectively together in advocating for arts funding, and training on how to make your voice heard on Capitol Hill. By uniting together in solidarity, we can make sure that art has a seat at the table. Registration to the event is free. Register here.

Part memoir and part novel, Margot McMahon’s If Trees Could Talk plumbs the mysteries of her family’s story in order to make sense of the lives of her remarkable parents, Irene and Mac. What do we really know about those who have raised us, and those who raised them? And what does all of this tell us about where we have come from and who we are? McMahon’s gathering of research, oral history, memory, art and imagined moments makes for a sprawling American story told with a keen eye and an open heart. - Patricia Ann McNair, Responsible Adults

It’s March and Spring is just around the corner....
....if only I could see around it to make sure.
But speaking of seasons, many, many seasons ago, when I was a young art student, I took a photography class. Recently I found an old brown folder containing a few photos from that class.
After being hidden away for almost 50 years, I decided that it was time to give them a new look and introduced them to collage. You can see many of them newly reinvented in The Brown Folder.
