Compound Yellow presents ZAK BOERGER & MELISSA ORESKY MUSIC/VIDEO SCREENING
Join them for music and video screening Saturday April 22nd 6pm-7pm at Compound Yellow!
Under his own name and as These Wonderful Evils, Zak Boerger has performed and released albums of slow burn, guitar-based music that sits somewhere between the ambient soundscapes of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp and the heavier approaches of guitar minimalists such as Heldon and Earth.
With his spouse and creative partner Melissa Oresky, Boerger released a CD/DVD set including Oresky’s video work, the product of a residency at the Petrified Forest National Park. Videos from this series and others will be screened during the performance.
Through her collage and painting based multidisciplinary practice, Melissa Oresky seeks to recognize plants, in all their mystery and ubiquity, as perceptive and expressive beings. Her work has been exhibited at a wide range of venues in Chicago and beyond, with recent exhibitions and curatorial projects at Boundary, Chicago; The Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL; Field Projects, NYC; and The Franklin, Chicago. She has published several artist’s books and prints with Kayrock Screenprinting, Brooklyn, and co-authored a 2020 essay exploring her recent artist’s book, Finder, with historian Keith Pluymers that was published in Antennae: The Journal of Nature and Visual Culture.
Oresky is currently a 2023 Wallis-Annenberg Helix Program fellow and Professor of Painting at Illinois State University. More info here.

The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association presents The Monday Enrichment Series Presents: The “New Woman”
1:15PM At the end of the Nineteenth century, the "New Woman" emerged: a woman who engaged in politics, flouted convention, and even worked outside the home. And yet, there was no "New Man" to greet her. The phrase "New Men" didn't even exist--that's how entirely not 'new' men were. Catherine Prendergast, author of The Gilded Edge, will introduce us to this clash of genders and two prominent New Women who chose death by cyanide rather than be thrust back into stifling lives.
This program is free for everyone. A voluntary suggested donation of $15 at the door for non-members is appreciated. To make a lunch reservation, which happens at 12pm before the program, click here.

The Village of Oak Park has a new public art sculpture! Prior to the pandemic, the District House (Lake and Euclid) developers commissioned artist Zach Balousek to create a
sculpture for the building. They saw one of Zach's sculptures in the 2018 Village of Oak Park's Sculpture Walk. Zach worked on the sculpture throughout the pandemic. The sculpture is made out of fiberglass, epoxy resin, steel and concrete. Inside of the sculpture are 18 organ pipes filled with glycerin and water that will gently chime. Recently, Zach heard Bob Dylan's song Shelter from the Storm that hit on a number of things while he was creating this stunning sculpture. He has titled the piece, Shelter.

Give an old instrument new life by donating it to PING!
Your instrument donation helps them ensure that all of thier students get their first choice of instrument when they sign up in the fall. When you donate an instrument to PING!, they repair it or tune it up as needed, so that it is ready to put in a student’s hands. So don’t let that unused instrument sit in the closet any longer.
This year, they especially need the following instruments:
Small violas (12 inch, 13 inch, 14 inch)
3/4 violins
Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)
Saxophones
Any step-up or intermediate level instrument (brass or woodwind)

The Illinois Arts Council Agency has partnered with the Capital Development Board’s
Art-in-Architecture Program in promoting an opportunity for Illinois artists. CDB is
now accepting Request for Qualifications from Illinois artists for major capital
projects across the state:
Quincy Veterans Home
CDB is now accepting Request for Qualifications to Illinois artists to create FIVE
permanent original public art pieces for the Long-Term Care Facility (LTC) at Quincy
Veterans Home in Quincy, Illinois. Please help the IACA in spreading the word about
this commission to Illinois artists.
This public art commission is open to all artists, artisans, or artist-led teams that live
and work in the State of Illinois. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 26, 2023.
The Quincy Veterans Home is currently undergoing a $230 million construction
enhancement project to upgrade and replace many of its aging buildings and provide
upgraded amenities to its veteran residents.
Founded in 1886, it was originally known as the Soldiers and Sailors Home. It is now the largest and oldest veterans' home in Illinois. It provides high-quality, skilled care to 300 Illinois veterans and their spouses.
This project will add a new 261,000-square-foot residential Long-Term Care Facility
and a 74,000-square-foot independent living building. The project also includes
upgrades to existing buildings, infrastructure, utilities, hardscaping, and landscaping to
support the new facilities.
Art will be an integral part of the entire campus. In addition to providing beauty to the
built environment, artwork will provide a sense of placemaking to create an atmosphere
of home and well-being for the entire Quincy Veterans Home community—residents,
families, staff, and volunteers.

Dear Singer,
There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in
December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers. We have presented a number of world and local premiers of works by major composers. I invite you to visit our website at mtsingers.org to learn more about the ensemble and that you consider joining them for the coming season.
Interested singers can contact me directly via phone or email, so that I can answer questions and give additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Teolis

Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis, associate professors in the African American Studies Program have been awarded an almost two million dollar grant from the Mellon Foundation! The generous grant will allow Wideman- Davis Dance to expand upon the Migratuse Ataraxia that was launched in 2019. Residencies of three months and six months will take place in cities across the South. Local communities and live audiences will engage in antebellum stories told through dance. This expansion was made possible through the Mellon Foundation’s “Monuments Projects”
The team worked very closely with Mellon for 15 months on the proposal with virtual meetings, mentorship, budget and proposal alterations. Needless to say, the Wideman Davis team worked extremely hard on the grant. They also said the Mellon staff were very supportive in building the best possible proposal to present to the board.
“The grant is not solely about Migratuse Ataraxia in its performative context, it’s about reimagining the original production and building new productions with the communities we are working in. The grant allows them to give fellowships to five to ten Black artists in Montgomery., AL, Harpersville AL, and Columbia SC. That support is extremely important to artists coming out of the pandemic.”
Tanya has strong ties to the Oak Park community. She trained for years under the guidance and care of Stephanie Clemens at the Academy of Movement and Music in Oak Park, Illinois..

To celebrate with you Goodreads has The Fifth Season Giveaways! (5/1-13)
The Chicago Tree Project (Second Edition). Mate E. Palmer First Place Book Award, celebrates its fifth season with fifty-five sculpted trees in over thirty miles of Chicago Parks. Neighbors embrace the public art statements while mourning the loss of mature tree canopies. Sculpting dead trees gives them a fifth season by harboring food and shelter for wildlife. From grave to cradle, the Chicago Tree Project will teach young tree-tenders of all ages how to care for the millions of saplings being planted to replace our lost canopy. Sculpting grand condemned trees with artistic statements, caring for replacement young plantlets, and showing that carbon is choking both young and old is our mission. Warming temperatures and more volatile weather stress trees making it more difficult for saplings to thrive.
