MOMENTA is proud to share their Spring Concerts

and celebrate 40 years of dancing in Oak Park!

The Matinee is The Empress and her New Clothes, originally created by Sarah Najera in 2013. Their new version for 2023 features updated choreography by Mei-Kuang Chen, Connor Cornelius, and Gina Sigismondi and includes colorful costumes (and wigs!), a musical score full of Mozart hits, and the silly antics of two Swindlers and a vain Empress.

In honor of MOMENTA’s 40th Anniversary, their evening performance Coming Home will feature a dynamic collection of new and restaged works choreographed by accomplished MOMENTA alumni. This program will also include solos from their graduating seniors.

Camille Wilson White has been at the center of the vibrant and diverse arts community in our villages for the past 25 years, first serving as board President of the Oak Park Area Arts Council and its Executive Director since 1999. She is the "Czar of Public Art" in Oak Park, coordinating multiple initiatives including the murals along the CTA/Metra viaduct along South Boulevard. She has statewide and national reach as board member of the Arts Alliance Illinois and through her extensive professional network.

Shown here in 2022 at the unveiling of the new plaque that marks the location of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church on today's Westgate in Downtown Oak Park, the center of Oak Park's Black community from 1905-1930. She worked with many in the community to ensure the plaque was produced and installed. Camille gets things done! Hear more of her stories at their March 9 Gala as she receives the "Heart of Our Villages Award" along with Jan Novak Dressel.

Chicago Literary Hall of Fame presents the Fuller Award Ceremony 6:00 PM

Harriette Gillem Robinet, the acclaimed author of 12 historical novels for young adults, will receive the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame's Fuller Award at a ceremony on Tuesday, March 14. The ceremony will take place at Dominican University's Performing Arts Center, starting at six p.m.; a reception with appetizers and drinks will follow. Speakers include Linda Robinet, Nora Brooks Blakely, Athena Williams, Frank Lipo, Glennette Tilley Turner, and Tsehaye Geralyn Hébert.

The Oak Park Public Library presents Words on Wednesday: "Heart Berries" 1:00 PM-2:00 PM

Having survived a profoundly dysfunctional upbringing only to find herself hospitalized and facing a dual diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar II disorder, Terese Marie Mailhot is given a notebook and begins to write her way out of trauma. The triumphant result is Heart Berries, a memorial for Mailhot's mother, a social worker and activist who had a thing for prisoners; a story of reconciliation with her father―an abusive drunk and a brilliant artist―who was murdered under mysterious circumstances; and an elegy on how difficult it is to love someone while dragging the long shadows of shame.

Mailhot trusts the reader to understand that memory isn't exact but melded to imagination, pain, and what we can bring ourselves to accept. Her unique and at times unsettling voice graphically illustrates her mental state. As she writes, she discovers her own true voice, seizes control of her story, and, in so doing, reestablishes her connection to her family, to her people, and to her place in the world. The Oak Park Public Library presents Folk Music Series Performance: Ruth & Max Bloomquist 7:00 PM-8:00 PM

Join them for a lively performance from Ruth and Max Bloomquist. Ruth and Max celebrate 45 years of performing their style of acoustic Americana, with roots in folk, bluegrass, and traditional country music. Ruth is well known for her songwriting as well as her striking alto voice. She was a winner of Merlefest’s Chris Austin Song Writing competition in 2003 with her gospel number, "By The River." The pair's 2010 CD release, "Turn Back a Page" reached No. 5 on the Folk DJ Airplay Chart with four songs in the top 100 for that year. A YouTube video featuring "Michigan Girl," a track from that CD, has been viewed over 395,000 times. The pair has toured in southern France nearly every year since 2008. A live CD was released in 2012 and a Christmas EP in 2015. Oak Park and River Forest High School is now displaying the artwork of the 2022 Off the Wall apprentices.

Off the Wall is a summer arts employment program in which young adults ages 16-22 apprentice with master artists to design, construct, and install

mosaic and bricolage murals in Oak Park and neighboring communities. The program began in 2005 and has since overseen the installation of over fifteen large-scale murals in Oak Park and the Austin community. The program is a great opportunity for young artists to engage in meaningful and enriching employment which provides experience and benefits the community. This summer will mark the 18th year the program has successfully run in the community. Applications for this summer's Off the Wall program will be online at the end of February. Residents of Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest are eligible to apply.

Oak Park Festival Theatre Names New Artistic Director

The Oak Park Festival Theatre, Oak Park’s premiere Equity theater and the oldest professional classical theater in the Midwest, has named Peter G. Andersen as its artistic director, beginning in January. Andersen “will set the stage for the thousands of annual attendees who look to Oak Park Festival Theatre not just for summer Shakespeare in the park but also for new interpretations of classic works year-round,” the company relays. “Oak Park Festival Theatre has set a vision for the coming three-to-five years that includes broadening our audience and our perspective to be more diverse and inclusive,” Barbara Cimaglio, president of the board of directors at Oak Park Festival Theatre, says in a release.

”I have been a long admirer of Oak Park Festival Theatre. It’s a company which has an outstanding reputation within the theater community of Chicago, and one I feel a great sense of kinship with,” Andersen adds. The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park presents the 8TH ANNUAL HEMINGWAY SHORTS COMPETITION

Do you share Ernest Hemingway’s dream? If so, the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park has a great opportunity for you to realize your creative aspirations. They are announcing their seventh annual Hemingway Shorts global competition, which was introduced in 2016 to give aspiring writers a chance to publish their work. This exciting venture promotes creative writing and is designed to capture new voices in fiction. 

Hemingway Shorts is one of the many ways that they demonstrate our commitment to thoughtful writing and reading – an important part of our mission statement in addition to preserving Hemingway’s literacy legacy. The Village of Oak Park has a new public art sculpture! Prior to the pandemic, the District House (Lake and Euclid) developers commissioned artist Zach Balousek to create a

sculpture for the building. They saw one of Zach's sculptures in the 2018 Village of Oak Park's Sculpture Walk. Zach worked on the sculpture throughout the pandemic. The sculpture is made out of fiberglass, epoxy resin, steel and concrete. Inside of the sculpture are 18 organ pipes filled with glycerin and water that will gently chime. Recently, Zach heard Bob Dylan's song Shelter from the Storm that hit on a number of things while he was creating this stunning sculpture. He has titled the piece, Shelter.

Your instrument donation helps them ensure that all of thier students get their first choice of instrument when they sign up in the fall. When you donate an instrument to PING!, they repair it or tune it up as needed, so that it is ready to put in a student’s hands. So don’t let that unused instrument sit in the closet any longer.

This year, they especially need the following instruments:

Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)

Wonder Works Children's Museum presents Dino Works Dinosaurs big and small will fill Wonder Works from March 29 to April 2 for their most anticipated takeover event of the year. Aspiring Paleontologists of all ages will be delighted by the wide array of dinosaur activities, starting with the giant T-Rex skeleton greeting them as they enter. Dino Works is so chock full of activities that families often like to come twice, to maximize their time in this once a year takeover event at Wonder Works Children’s Museum.

It's that time of year again! Downtown Oak Park is sourcing some artwork for their street lamp banners.

The Downtown Oak Park Business Association seeks original artwork from talented local artists. The winning artist will see their work displayed throughout prominent locations in the Downtown Oak Park business district and will also be incorporated in numerous promotional and marketing materials for the duration of 2023. Details:

-They are in search of an artist who can best capture the spirit of Downtown Oak Park with their original work. The theme is: People of DTOP.

-Commissioned artwork must be two-dimensional and may be made of any media.

-Downtown Oak Park will have ownership over the selected artwork and will reproduce the art in various marketing materials, such as banners, maps, etc.

-They will select three artists from all entries submitted. They then ask that the three chosen finalists submit an image that they feel will typify their commission for final selection.

-They will pay the final chosen commissioned artist $1500 for three final pieces.

instruments, or instruction that furthers the applicant's musical goals.

Chicago a cappella announce that their HerVoice Emerging Women Composers Competition is back for a third year! They are now accepting submissions for the competition, where winners will be selected to receive mentoring from composers Stacy Garrop and Zanaida Robles, receive a workshop and performance of their piece by either Chicago a cappella or partner organization Vancouver Youth Choir, and receive a $500 cash prize. The deadline to submit is April 1, 2023 More info here..

The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. 

This program operates on a two-year cycle with fellowships in prose and poetry available in alternating years. In 2023 they will be accepting applications in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction). Deadline March 8, 2023. More info here.

The National Endowment for the Arts presents Challange America

Challenge America offers support primarily to small organizations for projects in all artistic disciplines that extend the reach of the arts to groups/communities with rich and dynamic artistic and cultural contributions to share that are underserved. Challenge America features an abbreviated application, a robust structure of technical assistance, and grants for a set amount of $10,000. Grants require a cost share/match of $10,000 consisting of cash and/or in-kind contributions. Total project costs must be at least $20,000 or greater.

The National Endowment for the Arts invites applicants to engage with the agency’s five-year research agenda through two funding opportunities for research projects:

Research Grants in the Arts funds research studies that investigate the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components of the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or with other domains of American life. There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in

December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers.
