Compound Yellow presents the opening of Mikey Mosher’s Exhibition Biofeedback! ( time TBD )
“This exhibition, "Biofeedback" is a body of work by Chicago-based artist Mikey Mosher, which reflects on and attempts to rectify the loss of tactility in contemporary American culture. This loss is particularly obvious in the context of technology, and our physical interactions with it. Touch screens lessen the physical sensation of every swipe, type, and tap, so much so that these sensations need to be simulated back into the experience through added haptic feedback. This loss of touch has stretched into our interpersonal relationships even more during the pandemic era. Reflecting on these patterns brought about this body of work which attempts to both embody this loss of tactility, but also be an act of resistance to that loss. Pieces in this exhibition involve “hands-off” production processes such as lasercutting, but also require significant “hands-on” methods like sanding, collaging, painting, and arranging.
Mikey Mosher is an interdisciplinary artist from Massachusetts, currently based in Chicago. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Much of his work is influenced by his undergraduate Religious Studies background. This academic study of the religious history of New England allowed him to root his reflections on the relationship between religion, spirituality, colonial power, and indoctrination in historical events that took place where he grew up. Since then, he has been using his artistic practice as an act of perpetual self-reeducation; a way of filtering and rearranging the information he picks up from contemporary media to reflect the grim and surreal reality that underlies all corners of American life. More recently, he sees his practice as a channel for genuine spiritual reflection, both for himself and his audience, while infusing cultural critique into that process.

The Oak Park Public Library presents Otherworldly Reads: "Project Hail Mary" 7:00 PM-8:00 PM
In Otherworldly Reads, you can enjoy a bimonthly book discussion where they alternate between science fiction and fantasy literature.
In Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone. Or does he?

Join them on the second Tuesday of each month as they discuss works written by Latine authors.* Spanish language copies will be made available when possible. May Book Pick: The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
In one of the most important and beloved Latin American works of the twentieth century, Isabel Allende weaves a luminous tapestry of three generations of the Trueba family, revealing both triumphs and tragedies. Here is patriarch Esteban, whose wild desires and political machinations are tempered only by his love for his ethereal wife, Clara, a woman touched by an otherworldly hand. Their daughter, Blanca, whose forbidden love for a man Esteban has deemed unworthy infuriates her father, yet will produce his greatest joy: his granddaughter Alba, a beautiful, ambitious girl who will lead the family and their country into a revolutionary future.

The Oak Park Public Library presents Words on Wednesday: "The Worst Hard Time" 1:00 PM-2:00 PM
In Timothy Egan's The Worst Hard Time, the dust storms that terrorized America's High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since, and the stories of the people that held on have never been fully told. Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and author Timothy Egan follows a half-dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, going from sod huts to new framed houses to huddling in basements with the windows sealed by damp sheets in a futile effort to keep the dust out. He follows their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Drawing on the voices of those who stayed and survived--those who, now in their eighties and nineties, will soon carry their memories to the grave--Egan tells a story of endurance and heroism against the backdrop of the Great Depression Register here.

The Village of Oak Park has a new public art sculpture! Prior to the pandemic, the District House (Lake and Euclid) developers commissioned artist Zach Balousek to create a
sculpture for the building. They saw one of Zach's sculptures in the 2018 Village of Oak Park's Sculpture Walk. Zach worked on the sculpture throughout the pandemic. The sculpture is made out of fiberglass, epoxy resin, steel and concrete. Inside of the sculpture are 18 organ pipes filled with glycerin and water that will gently chime. Recently, Zach heard Bob Dylan's song Shelter from the Storm that hit on a number of things while he was creating this stunning sculpture. He has titled the piece, Shelter.

Give an old instrument new life by donating it to PING!
Your instrument donation helps them ensure that all of thier students get their first choice of instrument when they sign up in the fall. When you donate an instrument to PING!, they repair it or tune it up as needed, so that it is ready to put in a student’s hands. So don’t let that unused instrument sit in the closet any longer.
This year, they especially need the following instruments:
Small violas (12 inch, 13 inch, 14 inch)
3/4 violins
Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)
Saxophones
Any step-up or intermediate level instrument (brass or woodwind)

Dear Singer,
There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in
December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers. We have presented a number of world and local premiers of works by major composers. I invite you to visit our website at mtsingers.org to learn more about the ensemble and that you consider joining them for the coming season.
Interested singers can contact me directly via phone or email, so that I can answer questions and give additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Teolis

Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis, associate professors in the African American Studies Program have been awarded an almost two million dollar grant from the Mellon Foundation! The generous grant will allow Wideman- Davis Dance to expand upon the Migratuse Ataraxia that was launched in 2019. Residencies of three months and six months will take place in cities across the South. Local communities and live audiences will engage in antebellum stories told through dance. This expansion was made possible through the Mellon Foundation’s “Monuments Projects”
The team worked very closely with Mellon for 15 months on the proposal with virtual meetings, mentorship, budget and proposal alterations. Needless to say, the Wideman Davis team worked extremely hard on the grant. They also said the Mellon staff were very supportive in building the best possible proposal to present to the board.
“The grant is not solely about Migratuse Ataraxia in its performative context, it’s about reimagining the original production and building new productions with the communities we are working in. The grant allows them to give fellowships to five to ten Black artists in Montgomery., AL, Harpersville AL, and Columbia SC. That support is extremely important to artists coming out of the pandemic.”
Tanya has strong ties to the Oak Park community. She trained for years under the guidance and care of Stephanie Clemens at the Academy of Movement and Music in Oak Park, Illinois..

This...I...Do...For...Me Podcast
"Thrilled to share with you that I was invited to be on Robin Tillotson's This...I...Do...For...Me podcast. Robin Tillotson is the Founder and Chief Cultural Officer for This...I...Do...For...Me, a company geared toward offering women age 50+ international travel and cultural experiences.
Her podcast introduces you to phenomenal Black women who are clearly changing the narrative of what it means to age vibrantly.
It's funny to hear ones voice on a podcast, but this whole episode felt like a great conversation with an old friend.
Have a listen and tell me what you think!"

To celebrate with you Goodreads has The Fifth Season Giveaways! (5/1-13)
The Chicago Tree Project (Second Edition). Mate E. Palmer First Place Book Award, celebrates its fifth season with fifty-five sculpted trees in over thirty miles of Chicago Parks. Neighbors embrace the public art statements while mourning the loss of mature tree canopies. Sculpting dead trees gives them a fifth season by harboring food and shelter for wildlife. From grave to cradle, the Chicago Tree Project will teach young tree-tenders of all ages how to care for the millions of saplings being planted to replace our lost canopy. Sculpting grand condemned trees with artistic statements, caring for replacement young plantlets, and showing that carbon is choking both young and old is our mission. Warming temperatures and more volatile weather stress trees making it more difficult for saplings to thrive.
