The Oak Park Area Arts Council Remembers

Keith Taylor
Keith J. Taylor, 72, died on Dec. 16, 2021, after a long battle with cancer complicated by COVID-19. He will be greatly missed by the Oak Park area arts community.
Keith shared his passion for art for over 50 years, producing award winning cartoons for many outlets, teaching classes and giving private lessons for years, serving as president of the Oak Park Art League, and enjoying countless trips to museums and galleries far and wide.
Over the years, Keith showcased his art in OPAAC galleries located at Village Hall, Forest Park National Bank and the Oak Park Township Senior Services Dining Room. He was also a judge for the Village's Community Mini Mural Project.
“He was always willing to give you what he could,” his son Max said, “a ride, a gift he thought you’d like, drawings for absolutely any occasion — however big or small.”
His quick wit found humor and hope in everything from the absurdities of everyday life to the darkest days of American politics. A prolific artist, rarely seen without a pen and sketch pad, he filled more than 500 sketchbooks between 2016 and 2021 alone.
However, his greatest joy was finding the love of his life, Rhona, to whom he was married for 45 years. According to Max, “They filled the lives of everyone around them with art and curiosity and friendship and laughter.”

Don Offermann
Dr. Donald Allen Offermann, PhD, died on December 26, 2021 surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Verna, and his children.
In 1964 Don embarked on a long career at Oak Park and River Forest High School. He taught English and coached soccer and track, serving in various positions until he became the Superintendent/Principal. While at OPRF, he shared his passion for learning and leading, truly exemplifing the school’s motto of “Those Things That Are Best.”
Thirteen days after retiring from public education in 1999, Don started a 21-year career at Forest Park National Bank and Trust Company, continuing to serve the communities he loved. He was instrumental in the Madison Street Forest Park redevelopment, helping to transform it into the thriving retail, dining and entertainment destination that it is today.
Don was always a willing volunteer for the communities of River Forest, Forest Park, and Oak Park, including founding the now 53-year-old running club.
He took great delight in exhibiting artist work in the OPAAC Arts Council's gallery at Forest Park National Bank. Don always made sure to stop by and meet the artist and chat while the show was being installed.

Come and see practicing physicist Dr. Don Lincoln tell you about how much of what you thought you understood about the universe is wrong.

Give an old instrument new life by donating it to PING!
Your instrument donation helps us ensure that all of our students get their first choice of instrument when they sign up in the fall. When you donate an instrument to PING!, we repair it or tune it up as needed, so that it is ready to put in a student’s hands. So don’t let that unused instrument sit in the closet any longer.
This year, we especially need the following instruments:
Small violas (12 inch, 13 inch, 14 inch)
3/4 violins
Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)
Saxophones
Any step-up or intermediate level instrument (brass or woodwind)

Dear Singer,
There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in
December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers. We have presented a number of world and local premiers of works by major composers. I invite you to visit our website at mtsingers.org to learn more about the ensemble and that you consider joining us for the coming season.
Interested singers can contact me directly via phone or email, so that I can answer questions and give additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Teolis

POD Learning at The Actors Garden Begins in September
As you know by now, many school districts are going fully virtual in the fall in the interest of the health and safety of all concerned. The Actors Garden is offering theatre-enhanced pod-learning in our space.
This would involve small, self-contained groups that will only interact with other members of the group, while following all appropriate guidelines (masks, distance, etc.) The advantages we can offer are the ability for parents to drop their children off where they will have support and supervision throughout the day, much-needed socialization with other students, and a certain level of academic assistance when needed. We also have robust internet service, provide technical support, and can possibly offer computer rental so you don't have to purchase another device. During break times we would offer theatre activities and do as many things outdoors as we could. Indoors, we would be following correct protocols and we would keep doors and windows open as much as the weather permits. For More information contact gigi@theactorsgarden.com.

Margot McMahon has a new book If Trees Could Talk
Part memoir and part novel, Margot McMahon’s If Trees Could Talk plumbs the mysteries of her family’s story in order to make sense of the lives of her remarkable parents, Irene and Mac. What do we really know about those who have raised us, and those who raised them? And what does all of this tell us about where we have come from and who we are? McMahon’s gathering of research, oral history, memory, art and imagined moments makes for a sprawling American story told with a keen eye and an open heart. - Patricia Ann McNair, Responsible Adults

Jonathan Franklin has a backdrop/mural from an old cast performance it consists of five 3.5’x 8’ flats (think Picasso and Matisse meet Chagall). The theme of the program was Music/Dance and Friends/Family. He has been storing the panels and is wondering if there is a venue or wall space that might be appropriate and/or interested in permanently installing them. Contact Jonathan at jlfranklin4@comcast.net.
