e-ART has the latest arts events & happenings in the Oak Park, Forest Park & River Forest area. | |
The Village of Oak Park has a new public art sculpture! Prior to the pandemic, the District House (Lake and Euclid) developers commissioned artist Zach Balousek to create a
sculpture for the building. They saw one of Zach's sculptures in the 2018 Village of Oak Park's Sculpture Walk. Zach worked on the sculpture throughout the pandemic. The sculpture is made out of fiberglass, epoxy resin, steel and concrete. Inside of the sculpture are 18 organ pipes filled with glycerin and water that will gently chime. Recently, Zach heard Bob Dylan's song Shelter from the Storm that hit on a number of things while he was creating this stunning sculpture. He has titled the piece, Shelter.

The Oak Park Public Library presents American Modernism: Poetry of T.S. Eliot 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Please join for a series of six discussions focusing on the poetic work of T.S Eliot, the leading Modernist poet, playwright, editor, and literary critic.
Eliot exercised a very strong influence on Anglo-American culture from the 1920s until late in the century and continues to be highly valued today. His diction, style, and versification experiments revitalized English poetry, and in a series of critical essays, he shattered old orthodoxies and erected new ones. In 1948, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.
We are going to live read through Eliot’s most groundbreaking works starting with his early "The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock," "The Waste Land," and finally the entirety of "The Four Quartets"—the crowning achievement of Eliot’s poetic opus. We will discuss all poems during each of the six sessions, each devoted to one specific work by Eliot.
Previous knowledge of Eliot’s poetry is not necessary, but helpful as we deep dive into the intricacies of the Modernist movement as well as Eliot’s poetic compositions and writing style. Masks for everyone age 2+ are encouraged while attending this program. Register here.

3/4 violins
Cellos (1/4, 1/2, 3/4)

The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park presents BOOK DISCUSSION: IN OUR TIME WITH RENEE MALKNECHT January 26 6:30 PM 8:00 PM
As part of our Hemingway in the 21st Century series, Renee Malknecht, former literature teacher and current volunteer at the birthplace, will be leading a discussion on In Our Time, Ernest Hemingway's first collection of short stories published in the United States (1925). Ms. Malknecht regularly taught this book and A Farewell to Arms, while teaching at Aviano Air Base in Aviano, Italy – not far from where Hemingway was injured in WWI. Malknecht asserts that Hemingway’s use of ambiguity in this collection of interconnected short stories allows space for multiple interpretations. This makes it the perfect text for a lively discussion. Particular attention will be given to four stories: Indian Camp, The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife, The End of Something and Three Day Blow.
This is a free event but registration is required to reserve your spot as space is limited. Get tickets here.

Dear Singer,
There is nothing like live performance! If 2020 for you was anything like it was for most singers and vocal ensembles, you are ready to make music. Our organization, the Michael Teolis Singers, is thrilled to be able to gather this fall for a new season, to sing and perform. Each year at this time, we notify singers in the area of openings in our ensemble. I like to say that we perform good literature and we have fun. We present 2 major concerts in a season: in
December, with a Holiday theme, and in Spring with varying themes. In 14 seasons, we have featured concerts of local composers, Black composers, women composers, and Broadway composers. We have presented a number of world and local premiers of works by major composers. I invite you to visit our website at mtsingers.org to learn more about the ensemble and that you consider joining us for the coming season.
Interested singers can contact me directly via phone or email, so that I can answer questions and give additional information. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Michael Teolis

The Actors Garden, 909 S. Lombard, Oak Park is here to offer a variety of classes in a variety of different ways. From online to outdoor and small in person classes with safety precautions in place, there is a class for everyone. We also have special weekend workshops and more. Check out our Camps and Events page on our website.
POD Learning at The Actors Garden Begins in September
As you know by now, many school districts are going fully virtual in the fall in the interest of the health and safety of all concerned. The Actors Garden is offering theatre-enhanced pod-learning in our space.
This would involve small, self-contained groups that will only interact with other members of the group, while following all appropriate guidelines (masks, distance, etc.) The advantages we can offer are the ability for parents to drop their children off where they will have support and supervision throughout the day, much-needed socialization with other students, and a certain level of academic assistance when needed. We also have robust internet service, provide technical support, and can possibly offer computer rental so you don't have to purchase another device. During break times we would offer theatre activities and do as many things outdoors as we could. Indoors, we would be following correct protocols and we would keep doors and windows open as much as the weather permits. For More information contact gigi@theactorsgarden.com.

Cole DeGenova
Listen to Touching's remix of my song
"Full Grown," out today!
Hey y'all,
I'm excited to share the remix to "Full Grown" with you! It's another remote collab, thanks to Canadian artist Mike Falk aka Touching.
This "Full Grown" remix is also the b-side to my two-sided single release that I've even released on a 7" record earlier this summer.
It's not a traditional remix, as it's more cinematic than it is dancy. Mike even made it a true re-mix — as in, he used the existing tracks and mixed them differently, using this as an artistic challenge to make something new without adding any new instrumentation.
You can check out the remix here on Spotify, here on Apple Music, or here on Bandcamp.
Courtney gets another shout-out for vocals on this track and for designing the artwork for the remix, for my last single "Before I'm Gone".

A Dream Comes True - Again!
"In November 2016, I had a dream that people from all backgrounds were coming together around a table to create art. I started creating art with various Chicagoland communities shortly after that.
This time, I was invited to the Addison Public Library.
I’ve been working with Addison, IL residents at the Addison Public Library since the beginning of November. Sponsored by the Friends of the library, we have created portraits (Faces of Addison), painted mini-houses and worked on a community art mural.
This Artist Residency has truly been a blessing - working with people of all backgrounds and seeing them come together around art making.
It’s a dream come true again."

Makaya McCraven: In These Times
The live presentation of Makaya McCraven: In These Times features Makaya's core ensemble of musicians with string quartet.
"...the 11 song suite [In These Times] was created over 7+ years, as McCraven strived to design a highly personal but broadly communicable fusion of odd-meter original compositions from his working songbook with orchestral, large ensemble arrangements and the edit-heavy “organic beat music” that he’s honed over a growing body of production-craft. It’s an evolution and a milestone for McCraven, the producer; but moreover it’s the strongest and clearest statement we’ve yet to hear from McCraven, the composer."
