Learning Tree Annex: Meet Cassie Chee, Central Union Church's Summer Intern
Cassie (she,her) is currently a Masters of Divinity student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. She was raised in Kirkland, Washington and considers Oahu another home as she makes yearly visits with her Dad's side of the family. Cassie feels called to support and co-create with those who are most vulnerable in her communities. She is excited to be with Central Union this summer and looks forward to coming alongside the work God is already doing within and through the church.

Aloha Rivers Family Drive-Through
July 5
will be Pastor David’s last Sunday with Central Union Church. It’s always difficult to say good-bye and the time of COVID presents its own special challenges. What to do? – a parade to celebrate, honor and thank them for their many gifts to CUC seemed to fit the bill.
Members of Central Union Church are invited to drive-through between
5:00 and 6:30 pm on Sunday, July 5
to wish the Rivers ohana aloha. We want to make it festive and celebratory, while maintaining safe social-distancing guidelines.
Make a statement with your car – streamers, signs, balloons. Drop a card.
Just don’t leave your vehicle!
Entrance and exit will be routed through the Punahou Street parking lot. There will be signage and guides to direct traffic flow. The Rivers family will be stationed on the sanctuary steps to receive your farewell wishes.
Our congregation is so grateful to have been blessed with Pastor David’s leadership, the past 6 years, and the joy that it has been to have Kate, Sam, Jane and Will as part of the life of our congregation. They will be greatly missed. On Sunday, July 5 you can let them know how much.

Faith Action will be facilitating a Mayoral Accountability Assembly on
Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 9:30 – 11:30 am
. The event will be virtually live-streamed, please RSVP by email to

Honolulu mayoral candidates Keith Amemiya, Rick Blangiardi, John Carroll, Colleen Hanabusa, Choon James, and Kym Pine will be asked to commit to actionable solutions in the areas of Affordable Housing, Economic Equity and Environmental Justice. Questionnaires will be sent out to all additional candidates and shared with members after the event.
Facilitating Accountability Assemblies has been an essential part of Faith Action’s 24-year history. Holding elected officials accountable to create the necessary changes to benefit the lives our members and community is at the core of Faith Action’s work and mission. During these challenging times of COVID-19, competent and accountable leadership is needed now more than ever. Join Faith Action by tuning in live and be a collective voice for the changes that we want to see in our communities.

Faith Action for Community Equity hopes to add to that “little more light” by serving our community.
First, in April we helped to put together 15,000 face shields for our health workers. Lately, we became language translators.
Our local families, veterans, and small businesses can get direct financial, health, and medical help from the federal government’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
There are 15 categories of aid with long descriptions on how to access that help. Imagine the near impossibility for someone who is still learning English to wade through this sea of technical English! How can we make it accessible to all who qualify?
Recognizing this as an equity issue, Faith Action accepted Senator Brian Schatz’s request for translating the material into other languages. We were assigned Cantonese and Tagalog.
University of Hawaii Faith Action intern Raymond Chen immediately gathered his contacts and friends in the Chinese cultural and business communities who quickly combined their resources to complete the Cantonese translations in less than a week!
Finding the Tagalog translator took longer. Eventually, a university professor fluent in both English and Tagalog was found and she completed the translation in three days.
“My goodness, what an important public service you all are performing!” said Senator Schatz.
We know there are still many needs to be met. We invite everyone to join Faith Action in adding “just a little more light.”

Reopening Liaisons
Nathan Wong and Bruce Luxton will be serving as the Council’s liaisons on our phased plan of reopening. They will be the point persons that the Congregation can go to with ideas, questions or suggestions. In addition, they will work with staff to determine implementation strategies and assist in recruitment of volunteers that may be needed for specific tasks.

Mindful Movement with Bamboo Sticks
NOW ONLINE every Wednesday 5:00 - 6:15 PM
Taught by Marion Lyman-Mersereau. Come move your body and settle your mind with the bamboo stick practice! The Qigong routine with bamboo sticks was developed by an elderly Zen master to maintain his suppleness. With practice of this routine, one can maintain strength, balance, and breath control. It incorporates mindfulness practice as we become more aware of each movement and how it affects our breath and our bodies. You’ll need a 6ʻ stick of some variety - ideally bamboo and if you’re short a broom would do or a hiking pole. A 6ʻ lightweight smooth stick is best.
