Rooted In Love
We are inviting you to join our “Rooted in Love” stewardship journey along with our whole Central Union ‘ohana. One way to do this is by moving through our devotional, Whole-Life Generosity. Sharing the devotional together is a critical way that we will connect, discern, and support one another as we seek to grow in our generosity as a community of faith! Paper copies are free and will be available at in-person worship or in the church office. You can also download an electronic version from Amazon for $0.99 here:

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you’re interesting in gathering with others to discuss the devotional, please contact Pastor Mary at mary-herbig@centralunionchurch.org. Let's journey together through our devotional as we learn to practice “whole-life generosity” and may we commit to listening for God's guidance in our giving.

Please Note: The Day 26 devotional uses the metaphor of colonization. The Bible uses a similar metaphor to contrast the reign of Rome with the reign of Christ (Jn 8:36; 2 Cor 5:20; Phil 3:20). However, we know that in Hawai‘i, this language bears a history of pain and grief. We wish the author had chosen a different metaphor. Still, Christians are called to live with a grace and generosity that is often counter-cultural.
Rooted In Prayer
Join Pastor Mary and Pastor Brandon for a time of encouragement and prayer. Rooted in Prayer gives you a midweek opportunity to recenter and refocus your faith. Each week, during our Rooted in Love stewardship campaign, we will have two opportunities to come together to pray and to receive prayer. Whether your prayers are shared aloud or spoken silently in your heart, our scriptures promise that God hears them all. We hope you will join us.

Faith Action 25th Anniversary Reflection:
“One-on-Ones”: Building Collective Strength
by Patrick Zukemura, former Faith Action (FA) Organizer
A quote from President Barack Obama:
“As some of you may know, I got my start as a community organizer with a Gamaliel affiliate in Chicago… I learned that meaningful change always begins at the grassroots, and that engaged citizens working together can accomplish extraordinary things.”

In 2005 as a Faith Action organizer, I was fortunate and privileged to attend a weeklong national training with the Gamaliel Foundation in San Diego.
Attendees were ordinary citizens learning how to unleash the power within themselves to collectively impact the social, political, environmental, and economic decisions that affect their lives.
The most valuable practice I learned was one-on-ones. This process emphasizes the importance of one person taking the lead to have a conversation with one other person to start and sustain relationships and to find out what’s important to that person.

Silence is God’s first language, everything else is a poor translation.
So, to hear God in God’s language one has to enter into silence too.
