2020 Nov 1 | Fall #6
Upcoming Online Worship
Sun Nov 1, 10:00am ~ “The 1619 Project”
~ Adine Usher and Joe Majsak

In order to understand the brutality of American capitalism, we have to start on the plantation. And we also need to know how sugar was the “white gold” that fueled slavery. We welcome guest speakers from The 1619 Project team, and invite you to join them after worship for Session 5: “Capitalism” and “Sugar.”

Sun Nov 8, 10:00am ~ “What Does It Mean?”
~ Rev. Meredith Garmon

Election results might be clear by this Sunday. Who won? And what does it mean for us now? Or maybe the outcome will still be in doubt -- in which case, what does that mean? Let's reflect together on where we are -- and where we go from here.

Messages from Ministry

Election Watch Vigil. At 7pm on Tue Nov 3, I'm going to open up Zoom Room 7899 (HERE). I invite you to join me to celebrate/commiserate/process and reflect upon the developments as they come in. Drop in and out of the CUUC Zoom conversation as the spirit moves you -- perhaps muting yourself and turning off your video, but letting the conversation play in the background, or in an adjacent room, until you're ready to join in for a while. This zoom room will be up and going for as long as there are still folks logged on to it -- all night long, if there's need, for whoever might feel the need for our community's presence to be with them on this night.

Then the same zoom room (7899 - link above) will be open again the next day, Wed Nov 4, at noon for us to further share our feelings and process together what it (whatever IT may be) means.

Great THANKS to all who donated goodies for the children's dessert drive! We had a box full of treats to go with the meals for HOPE Kitchen this week. This was one of their Hunger & Homelessness action projects this fall. Look for another opportunity in November.

This Sunday during worship, watch for two RE videos. First, the annual Halloween parade, which is virtual this year. Second, the 5th-7th grade video to encourage voting, one of their "YoUUth the Vote" action projects this fall.

K-12th grade Religious Education (RE) classes meet this Sunday:
11:30am, K-4th grade / 11:45am, 5th-7th grade / 12:00pm, 8th-12th grade. All log into Rm 8428, then each class has their own breakout room.

Click HERE for the Fall 2020 overview and schedule. Sign up HERE to receive weekly RE newsletters, which include at-home resources for families.

In honor of CUUC's dialogue centered on The 1619 Project, this Sunday's musical selections celebrate the contributions of musicians of African descent. The Gathering Music features recorded performances by iconic Black musicians in Spirituals. Elsewhere, the repertoire focuses on compositions by female composers of African descent... Read more HERE.

The 1619 Project

The 1619 Project - Session 5: “Capitalism” & “Sugar,Sun Nov 1, 1:30pm, Rm 7899
When Columbus made his second voyage across the Atlantic in 1493, refined sugar was a luxury product. The labor required in its manufacture was a barrier to bulk production, and may have remained so if it weren’t for the enormous market in enslaved laborers, who had no way to opt out of the dangerous work. Learn more in this Sunday's service, featuring Joe Majsak and Adine Usher from the 1619 Project team. Then join our discussion after worship.

Election Watch Vigil

  • Election Watch Vigil, Tue Nov 3, 7:00pm, Rm 7899
  • Day After Election Gathering, Wed Nov 4, 12:00pm, Rm 7899
Rev. Garmon hosts a meeting for people to celebrate / commiserate / process / reflect upon the election developments as they come in. "November Tuesday"

At the Sun Oct 18 worship, Rev. Meredith shared again his poem "November Tuesday" about voting as a spiritual practice. If you missed it, or would like to hear it again and be inspired, click HERE. You may also read the poem as part of Rev. Meredith's 2018 sermon HERE. Many thanks to Kim Force for creating the stand-alone video.
From the Reopening Planning Group

As we move into November, we wanted to provide you with an update on the work of the Reopening Committee. Unfortunately, due to the conditions around the pandemic, the Committee continues to feel that it is not safe to re-open for in-person services at this time.

We thank each of you for the valuable feedback you provided through the recent survey. While congregants overwhelmingly concurred that it would not be prudent to return to in-person services this fall, we want you to know that we continue to put in place protocols for when the time comes that we can safely reopen for worship.

In the meantime, we have cautiously agreed to allow small group renters wishing to use our building again to do so. They must follow the protocols we have established, including temperature checks at the door, mask wearing at all times and remaining 6 feet apart. Each participant is asked to sign a waiver that will provide information for contact tracing if needed. Additionally, our members and friends currently using the building for things like HOPE Kitchen food preparations also are asked to sign a waiver.

Following our most recent wonderful outdoor events like the fabulous Fun Day and the most creative "Fun-Raiser" auction anyone could have imagined, it is clear that the members of CUUC like to be together! We thank you for hanging in there with us as we continue to try to work our way through such unprecedented times.

As always, feel free to share with us any comments or suggestions you may have. Contacts: Aimee Katz (katzaimee@aol.com) or Tim Lynch (timo@tlync.com)

Be well and stay safe, everyone.

Share the Plate for Nov: Ecumenical Food Pantry
This month we share half our non-pledge collection with the Ecumenical Emergency Food Pantry of White Plains. The Pantry was founded in 1979 by CUUC and four other congregations as a temporary response to individuals with food insecurity. The need since then has only increased. Today the Pantry is a massive effort, operating almost year round supplying nutritious food to hundreds of local families each month, with support from several congregations across faith traditions. CUUC has continuously assisted in this effort with both funds and volunteers including members Vicky Van Wert and the late Lucille Ross, who worked tirelessly at the Pantry for years.
