Member-Only Career Day
Cal Poly, GrC Department, San Luis Obispo
May 17, 2019

The PIASC team continues visiting members and one concern we found to always come into conversation is the lack of qualified people. Whether it be a pressman or a sales representative, there is just not enough.

PIASC is working to make a positive impact on this shortage of talent in our industry and one of those efforts is a PIASC hosted member-only career day at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on May 17th.

This event is limited to 8 member companies on a first come, first serve basis. Those participating will have the opportunity to meet and interview Graphic Communications students who have been involved in a course study that combines classroom work with time on various pieces of equipment. The event is also a great chance to showcase your organization. Some members use displays while many opt to bring samples and literature that describe their organizations. Giveaways are popular with the students and leave a lasting impression.

Facing the deterioration of the machines and the advance of new technologies in Argentina, the printing presses are closing their workshops. At the same time, a group of young people rediscovers the greatest technical innovation in the history of the written word: the typesetting printing. But it will be difficult for them to learn the trade since it has always been passed down from master to apprentice – and they are
outsiders. The last graphic mechanic of the country will be in charge of teaching them so that this ancient technique can withstand the passage of time.

Do you have employees who are
CPR/First Aid Certified?
Being trained in CPR and first aid can be invaluable when someone is in serious medical distress. These techniques can help save someone who has suffered a heart attack, or any number of other emergency situations.

It can take as little as six minutes for the brain to die when it is not being supplied by oxygenated blood. Administering CPR can prevent serious brain injury. In severe bone injuries, knowing how to set or immobilize the bone can mean the difference between a full recovery and not being able to bear weight on the bone in the future. Cuts that are not properly cleaned can become infected. In the minutes immediately following an injury, how fast someone is treated can have a large impact on the future health of the injured person.

PIASC will hold a First Aid & CPR Training with Bloodbourne Pathogens on:
April 24, 2019
8:00 am - 1:00 pm
PIASC Conference Center
5800 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 400

Don't Get Scammed by Your Temp Agency
Don’t Get Scammed by Your Temp Agency If you use the services of temporary agencies, you need to take steps to ensure you don’t fall victim to the recent scam where employees are not paid appropriate wages, thereby leaving printers on the hook for the balance.

Be sure that your contracts with temp agencies:
  • Confirm that the agency is paying workers the agreed wage. Whether this is minimum wage or higher, your contract should also require proof that this is occurring.
  • Clearly state that your company is not a joint employer. If you use large numbers of temp employees you should also consider including a statement in the contract saying that a representative of the temp agency must be placed in your facility to handle scheduling, discipline, wage and other worker issues.
  • Require proper insurance. Make sure that the temp agency has the proper insurance coverage to handle any government inquiries and subsequent actions.
