Retirement: the good, the bad, and the ugly
By Lou Caron, PIASC President/CEO
Hardly a day goes by without a phone call from someone looking to sell their printing business and retire. The word “retirement” invokes images of golf, tennis, and travel. The truth is, the quality of your retirement will depend on how prepared you are both financially and emotionally and not necessarily in that order.

While most people have given some thought to their financial well being in retirement, few have thought about the psychological impact. The emotional challenges faced by many retirees, especially individuals in powerful, decision-making positions like business owners should be well thought.

Are Forklift Drivers Trained?
Forklift training is a Cal/OSHA Safety Training Requirement. California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3668 requires the employer to:
  • Certify that operators have been trained
  • Re-certify training every 3 years
  • Refresher training when the driver has an accident or exhibits unsafe operation of the forklift.
The good news is you don’t have to hire an outside consultant or a certified trainer to conduct the training; however, if you choose someone from within your company to do the training, you must make sure that individual has, not only extensive knowledge and experience with forklifts, but also the skill to conduct the training.
The PIASC Forklift Training Manual provides the trainer with a ready-made course to conduct operator training. The material, which follows point-for-point the Cal/OSHA forklift training standard, includes the instructor’s guide and PowerPoint presentation.
The material should be used as follows:
  1. The trainer should review the Forklift Training Manual and the PowerPoint Presentation.
  2. Once the trainer is comfortable with the material, he or she will use the PowerPoint presentation for the classroom session.
  3. Following, there is also a practical component.
The amount of time for training should be at least three hours.
This training manual is available to PIASC members ONLY!
To order a copy of this manual, please contact Emily Holguin , 323.728.9500, Ext. 200.

U.S. Postal Service Announces New Prices for 2020 - No change in price of Forever stamp
The United States Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) today of price changes to take effect Jan. 26, 2020.

The proposed prices, approved by the Governors of the Postal Service, would raise Mailing Services product prices approximately 1.9 percent. Shipping Services price increases vary by product. For example, Priority Mail Express would increase 3.5 percent and Priority Mail would increase 4.1 percent, on average. Although Mailing Services price increases are based on the Consumer Price Index, Shipping Services prices are primarily adjusted according to market conditions. The Governors believe these new rates will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with needed revenue.

Moving from Boss to Coach
“Because I’m the boss” just doesn’t cut it anymore. Today, effective managers realize that if they want to engage and motivate their people, they must form a partnership with them. That means evolving from a boss into a coach—the end of top-down management.

More and more, managers are learning to relinquish the traditional role of “boss.” They understand that workers will perform and grow when managers become partners in the process of work and the process of learning.

Affected facilities are those that operate in the region that is under the SCAQMD’s jurisdiction: Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside Counties, as well as parts of San Bernardino County.

How the New York Times Is Made
The Making Of
The New York Times is considered one of the most reputable publications in the world. To print the paper in a timely fashion and have it arrive on readers' doorsteps by the next morning, crews at the paper's printing plants work through the night. They start their shift at 10 p.m. and end around 3 a.m. About 80,000 copies of The New York Times are printed an hour and it's a non-stop process to get the job done. We visited The New York Times’s College Point Printing Plant in Queens, NY to learn all that goes into this printing process.

Quote of the Week
"Stop asking why they keep doing it and start asking why we keep allowing it."
