Top 10 Don'ts When Conducting
Background Checks

Are you using the appropriate state and federally compliant releases and disclosures?

Employers often have false senses of security when performing background checks. Did you know the results of a nationwide criminal database search, by itself, is not permissible for employment decision purposes? Are you sure your background screening vendor is licensed to sell you information?

This webinar will address some frequent and major mistakes employers make when conducting background checks. We will stress the importance of using the appropriate forms and releases when conducting screening. The topics covered will include Form I-9 verification, immigration issues and the potential legal and financial consequences for non-compliance.

Banning Mobile Devices on the Production Floor
Even in today’s “always connected” age, you do not have to allow employees access to their personal mobile devices on the production floor. In addition to issues related to lost productivity, mobile devices and heavy equipment just don’t mix well from the safety perspective. For example, an employee who looks down at his device while operating a forklift can crash, and a press operator who is distracted by a text while running a printing press can get severely injured.

In fact, given the safety hazards that personal electronic devices pose, banning them on the production floor may be the best option. If you would like to take this route, PIA has drafted the following sample policy for members’ use:

Cell Phones and Personal Electronic Devices (iPods, iPads, tablets, etc.)
For your safety and the safety of everyone at the Company, the production floor must remain free from distractions. Neither cell phones nor personal electronic devices are allowed on the production floor. These devices may never be used while operating a motorized vehicle such as a lift truck, pallet jack or delivery vehicle. Employees may keep their devices in a locker, car or other secure location at your own risk. Employees may use their devices off of the production floor during breaks. Management and supervisory personnel are permitted to use cell phones only for professional reasons on the production floor.

PIASC Member-Only Career Day at Cal Poly SLO
In the past months, the PIASC team has been visiting members and one concern we found to always come into conversation is the lack of qualified people. Whether it be a pressman or a sales representative, there is just not enough.

PIASC continues working to make a positive impact on this shortage with several efforts. Our first step was creating a private, PIASC Member-Only Career Day at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (CPSLO) on Friday, November 9th . This event has limited space therefore companies that are interested are on a first come, first serve basis.

Those participating will have the opportunity to meet and interview Graphic Communications students who have been involved in a course study that combines classroom work with time on various pieces of equipment. PIASC will also host a welcome dinner on Thursday, November 8th.

If you are interested in participating in this event,
please contact Kristy Villanueva at 323.728.9500, Ext. 215.
