City Budget Round Up
Do you wonder where your property taxes go? Are you curious about how your City decides which street sections to repair next? The City of South Pasadena, like many local governments, makes these and other important decisions through the annual budget process, which takes place between March and June each year.
On Saturday, March 11, the City began the process with the annual Community Forum on Budget and Priorities . Over 40 community members participated in meaningful dialogue with City staff about the collective interests of the City. During the event, City staff asked participants to rank a list of six projects so the Council and staff could better understand what is viewed as "must have vs. nice to have" projects. Top projects/programs identified included:
  • Creation of the Arroyo Seco Bicycle/Pedestrian Trail,a 0.6-mile mixed-use transportation and recreational trail along the Arroyo that will connect bicyclists and pedestrians to Pasadena in the north and Los Angeles in the South.
  • Construction of an updated Emergency Operations Center where City staff can perform all functions needed during a catastrophic event.
On Tuesday, March 21, the City held the Special City Council Meeting on Budget , where staff reviewed the City's finances, the proposed Capital Improvement Plan, and staff funding requests for the upcoming year's budget.

The input received at the Community Forum and Special Council Meeting will be used as the City Council and staff continue the annual budget process in May and June 2016. At the May 17 City Council meeting, staff will present a draft budget for Fiscal Year 2017-18. Finally, at the June 7 City Council meeting, the City will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed budget and, potentially, adopt it. Public comment is encouraged at each meeting.

Monterey Road Street Improvement Project
The Monterey Road Street Improvement Project is almost complete. Some of the improvements to Monterey Road were pedestrian push button upgrades, repairs to sidewalks, ADA curb ramp installations, and traffic signing. This project will increase safety for pedestrians and relieve traffic congestion on one of our most traveled roads. Infrastructure was also enhanced through underground utility work, water meter and fire hydrant replacements, and stormwater drain connections.
The City of South Pasadena thanks you for your patience during construction. We realize it was an inconvenient but necessary project that we hope will serve South Pasadena well for many years to come. Click here to learn more about this project.
