Community Meeting  on our Urban Forest
Thursday, August 25, 2016
You are invited to a presentation on the City's urban forest, street lighting, traffic signals and median landscaping. The City is in the process of updating the Lighting and Landscape Maintenance District which funds the operation and maintenance of all these items.

South Pasadena is proud to be a part of Tree City USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program recognizing cities that support a healthy tree canopy. The benefits of a robust urban forest include cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings, increased property values, and commercial activity. Many of South Pasadena's trees are in the later stages of their life cycle which requires more pruning, removal, and eventually replacement. While the maintenance cost has risen, the assessment rate has not changed since 1996.

The Community Meeting will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 6:30 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers, 1424 Mission Street. This meeting will provide information on the function of the District, and the proposed assessment updates. Please plan to attend to learn about the assessment update and to provide your input before the report is presented to the City Council for further consideration.
Prepare for Possible Rotating Outages this Summer
So Cal Edison flyer explaining Rotating Outages - To obtain this information_ go to http___on.sce.com_rotatingoutages
Due to the recent issues of Southern California Gas Company's Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility, the State of California is predicting that electrical services in Southern California may be negatively impacted, leading to possibly multiple rotating electrical outages this summer.

What is a Rotating Outage?
A rotating outage is a controlled electric outage that is called as a last resort when there is a regional power emergency. For an hour at a time, Southern California Edison shuts down power by geographic groups, known as rotating outage groups, to help ease the demand on the electrical grid. These rotating outages are required by the California Independent System Operator (ISO) to help your community avoid larger and longer lasting power outages.

Where do I find my Rotating Outage Group Number?
You can find your Rotating Outage Group in a number of ways:

What can I do to help prevent rotating outages?
Southern California Edison encourages everyone to conserve energy this summer, including reduced use of electricity and natural gas. Click here to view tips on how to conserve electricity this summer

Now is the Time to Trim Your Oak Tree
Oak Tree on a blank background
Residents are allowed to trim their Oak Trees from July through October. In order to trim an oak or California native tree in South Pasadena, the resident must first complete and submit an application which can be picked up at City Hall, 1414 Mission Street, or downloaded from the City's website. Before trimming is allowed, a City Inspector will examine the tree to evaluate how much can be trimmed while still keeping the tree healthy. Note that a similar process exists for the trimming of all trees in the City. The tree trimming inspection and permit fee is only $60.00.

South Pasadena is proud to be a Tree City USA member. Healthy trees are important to our city for a variety of reasons. Trees clean our air, provide oxygen, cool the streets, conserves energy, help prevent soil erosion and water pollution, and beautify our City.

Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase 2 is Now Underway
Diagram of a Sewer Lateral - Homeowner is responsible for the sewer lateral to the point where it connects to the sewer main.
The City of South Pasadena commenced construction of the Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase 2 in May. This project is the second phase of a City-wide project to repair aging sanitary sewer lines.

You can assist by checking the health of your sewer lateral, the line that goes from your building to the public sewer line. Maintaining the lateral is the property owner's responsibility, and includes keeping the line flowing and free of debris such as roots, grease, and backed-up tissue paper. Clean, flowing laterals avoid back-ups into your property and do not leak sewage waste into our groundwater. Now would be a good time to have your lateral checked by your plumber. Residents and property owners should be on the look out for notifications specifying project construction start dates in your neighborhood.
