Guide to Tree Watering

Trees are an integral part of South Pasadena and add to the Community's charm.  In addition, trees provide many Community wide benefits including cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values.  South Pasadena's trees are suffering from the drought.  To help keep your trees alive and healthy, please water them. Below are some guidelines to help you determine when, where and how much to water.

* Water every one to four weeks around the drip-line of the tree (the outer canopy of the leaves).
* Water slowly for hours or overnight with a traditional hose or coil a soaker hose around the tree allowing water to seep out through its tiny pores.
* Make sure the water gets into the soil at least two feet. Tree watering stakes are helpful (available at hardware stores).
* Create a moat at the root zone to hold the water and reduce runoff (move moat area out as tree grows).
* One to two deep waterings are much better than many shallow waterings.
* Place 2" to 3" of mulch around the tree (keep it away from the tree trunk). The tree's leaves are great mulch!
* Remove grass from around the tree so there is no competition for water.

If you have any additional questions on tree watering please contact the Public Works Department at 626-403-7240 or click here to visit our website.

Oak Tree Trimming Season is Underway!

Residents are only allowed to trim their Oak Trees from July through October. In order to trim an oak or California native tree in South Pasadena, the resident must first complete and submit an application,  available at City Hall, 1414 Mission Street,or from the City's website. Before trimming is allowed, a City Inspector will examine the tree to evaluate how much can be trimmed while still keeping the tree healthy. A similar process exists for the trimming of all trees in the City. The tree trimming inspection and permit fee is only $60.00.  Click here for more information on trimming trees.

South Pasadena is proud to be a Tree City USA member. Healthy trees are important to our city for a variety of reasons. Recently, City staff began installing tree watering rings in an effort to ensure new additions our urban forest will grow and flourish.  Click here for more information on proper tree care and watering at your property.
