LLMD Update Community Meeting
Wednesday, January 11, 2017
magnolia library tree
You are invited to a presentation on the City's urban forest, street lighting, traffic signals and median landscaping. The City is in the process of updating the Lighting and Landscape Maintenance District which funds the operation and maintenance of all these items.

South Pasadena is proud to be a part of Tree City USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program recognizing cities that support a healthy tree canopy. The benefits of a robust urban forest include cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings, increased property values, and commercial activity. Many of South Pasadena's trees are in the later stages of their life cycle which requires more pruning, removal, and eventually replacement. While the maintenance cost has risen, the assessment rate has not changed since 1997.

The Community Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 6 pm in the Council Chamber, 1424 Mission Street. This Meeting will provide information on the function of the District, and the proposed assessment updates. Click here to learn more about the assessment.

Adam plays historical woodwind instruments and Rotem plays the recorder. The early "classical" music they play often has folk and popular elements, and can be "pretty toe-tapping." Click here to learn more about the artists.

This free event is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, who will approve their new 2017 officers after a brief vote. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and no tickets or reservations are necessary. Refreshments will be served.

in the country of the blind bookcover
An Author/Film Night with Matthew Arkin will be presented at 7 pm in the Library Community Room, 1115 El Centro Street, on Thursday, January 26, 2017. It will feature a presentation by author and actor Matthew Arkin, and a screening of the classic "Wait Until Dark" (1967) with Audrey Hepburn in one of her most iconic roles. His first book "In the Country of the Blind: The First Zack Brandis Novel of Suspense" was published in 2013 after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $18,000 from more than 200 backers. Matthew is a South Pasadena resident who will be talking about his debut novel and introducing the film, which has been called one of the most suspenseful movies ever made.

Library Strategic Planning Survey Analyses Now Available
library
Public response to South Pasadena Public Library's online Strategic Planning survey has been very strong with about 700 community members completing the online forum.  The online survey was utilized to collect opinions, suggestions, and thoughts about the Library from the public. The Library's Strategic Planning Consultant, Joe Matthews, also conducted a Strategic Planning Community Forum on October 22, 2016. It was attended by about 20 individuals, comprised of members of the public, the Friends of the Library, the Library Board of Trustees, and Library staff.   The Library is very appreciative of all the input from the public from both the Community Forum and the online forum.

Mr. Matthews has recently published four new easy-to-read documents that offer analyses of the public's responses to the Library Strategic Planning: "Analysis of Online Survey- Inspiring Ideas," "Analysis of the Community-Related Questions," "Online Survey Appendix, and "Online Survey Related Questions". In order to preserve our urban forest, it is important to act now! South Pasadena Beautiful is hosting a tree planting drive with the goal to plant 50 trees by Arbor Day, March 2017. You can help by funding the planting of a tree through the South Pasadena Tree Dedication Program. Donors can work with the City Arborist to pick a location and specie of tree close to their business, residence, or where the need is the greatest.

Each tree dedication is $195. All tree donations made through South Pasadena Beautiful are tax deductible and generate a one year membership. Click here for more information about the tree drive.

South Pasadena residents have a long history of civic engagement, and nowhere is that more evident than in the City's urban forest. A rich cast of active community members have supported the planting and protection of trees, helping jumpstart the creation of South Pasadena's tree canopy. The abundant tree canopy brings many benefits including increased home values, cleaner air, storm water mitigation, and a cooler environment.
