Change in Library Hours
Picture of the Front of the Library
The South Pasadena Public Library Board of Trustees and City Council recently approved changing the Library hours to be open later on Thursday nights. These changes in hours were recommended in the recently completed Library Operations Study to better serve the community by aligning Library hours to a major traffic and activity pattern of the community.

The South Pasadena Farmers Market, conducted only a couple of blocks away each Thursday, usually attracts about 3,000 to 4,000 residents every week. The Library looks forward to attracting and being open to serve visitors of the Farmers Market and the rest of the community on Thursday nights.

Starting October 31, 2016 the South Pasadena Public Library hours will be:
  • Sundays from 1 to 5 pm
  • Mondays from 10 am to 6 pm
  • Tuesdays from 11 am to 9 pm
  • Wednesdays from 11 am to 9 pm
  • Thursdays from 11 am to 9 pm
  • Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm
  • Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm

Thanksgiving Parking Hours
Thanksgiving Parking Overnight parking restrictions will be relaxed from Wednesday, November 23, through Monday, November 28, 2016. All other parking restrictions will be enforced including preferential parking districts, timed-restrictions and parking a vehicle continuously for 72 hours.

For daytime parking options, the Mission-Meridian Parking Garage is open to the public from 12 noon to 2 am daily. Holiday and weekend parking is available from 4 am to 2 am the following day. The City recognizes the Thanksgiving holiday as Thursday, November 24, 2016.

The public parking lot at the corner of Hope Street and Mound Avenue is a great place to park and shop at local businesses. There is two hour time-restriction parking from 6 am to 6 pm, and unrestricted parking from 6 pm to 2 am. There is no overnight parking allowed in the public parking lots.

Please click here for additional information on parking regulations or call the Police Department at (626) 403-7270.

In response to new state regulations that allow water providers to determine their own water reduction targets based on local water supply, the South Pasadena City Council approved transitioning to a Stage 1 Water Supply Shortage at the September 21, 2016 Council meeting.

The changes took effect Thursday, October 6, 2016, and include:

1. Watering with sprinklers is limited to three days per week.

a. Addresses ending in an even number (0,2,4,6,8)

may water on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

b. Addresses ending in an odd number (1,3,5,7,9)

may water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

2. A recommended 20% reduction in annual water consumption from 2013 levels.

The following prohibitions, per SPMC 35.42 enacted in 1991, remain in effect:
  • Water leaks or breaks must be fixed within 72 hours.
  • No overhead watering between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.
  • No runoff of irrigation water.
  • Hoses must have shut off nozzle when washing vehicles.

Library Strategic Plan Survey
inspiring ideas
Community input sought! The South Pasadena Public Library is updating its Strategic Plan to guide its services for the next three years. Coming on the heels of its Library Operations Study, the Library is looking at its collections, programs, services, technology, and the facility, to name but a few key areas.

The Library Board of Trustees has worked with a Library Planning Consultant to formulate survey questions to obtain input from individual members of the community regarding the needs of the Library. For the Strategic Planning process it is critical that the Library receive broad community participation in the process. The Library invites all community members, even non-Library users, to take a very brief online survey. The Library again thanks all respondents for their time, interest, usage, and support.

South Pasadena Beautiful Tree Drive
Green tree with finger print"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." -Chinese Proverb

In order to preserve our urban forest, it is important to act now! South Pasadena Beautiful is hosting a tree planting drive with the goal to plant 50 trees by Arbor Day, March 2017. You can help by funding the planting of a tree through the South Pasadena Tree Dedication Program. Donors can work with the City Arborist to pick a location and specie of tree to be planted close to their business, residence, or where the need is the greatest.

Each tree dedication is $195. All tree donations made through South Pasadena Beautiful are tax deductible and generate a one year membership to the nonprofit organization. Click here for more information.

Tree City USA!
Tree City USA Logo- A green tree on a white background
Did you know that South Pasadena has been named Tree City USA by Arbor Day for 17 years straight? The Tree City USA program is an Arbor Day Foundation program recognizing cities that support a healthy tree canopy.

The benefits of a robust urban forest include cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings, and increased property values.

Caring for our trees takes a year round, community wide effort. No matter how old your trees are, or what size, caring for them can be easy if you follow some basic rules. Click here to learn what you can do to care for trees.

Monterey Road Street Improvement Project Continues
Monterey Road Construction Project The City started the Monterey Road Street Improvement Project in the first week of October 2016. Construction is expected to continue into early 2017. Segments of Monterey Road from Meridian Avenue to Fair Oaks Avenue and from Pasadena Avenue to 300-feet east of Pasadena Avenue are scheduled to be repaved as part of this project. This will require the temporary closure of lanes and delays are expected, so please plan accordingly. The City is making every effort to minimize delays. All passersby should adhere to all posted signs near the work site for both your and the workers' safety.

Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase 2 is Now Underway
Diagram of a Sewer Lateral showing that the homeowners responsibility can go beyond the property line to the sewer main located beneath the roadway.
The City of South Pasadena commenced construction of the Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase 2 in May. This project is the second phase of a City-wide project to repair aging sanitary sewer lines.

You can assist by checking the health of your sewer lateral, the line that goes from your building to the public sewer line. Maintaining the lateral is the property owner's responsibility, and includes keeping the line flowing and free of debris such as roots, grease, and backed-up tissue paper. Clean, flowing laterals avoid back-ups into your property and do not leak sewage waste into our groundwater. Now would be a good time to have your lateral checked by your plumber.

Residents and property owners should be on the look out for notifications specifying project construction start dates in your neighborhood.
