Saving Energy Paid for this South Pasadena Resident!
Confessions of an Energy Conservation Fanatic
|
|
Residents Tom and Melinda Hsai at the 2016 Rose Bowl Game
|
For South Pasadena resident Tom Hsai, saving energy is a passion that led to an unexpected place - the 2016 Rose Bowl Game! Thanks to their work to reduce their energy usage, Tom and his wife Melinda
won 2 tickets, VIP access and parking to the Rose Bowl Game on New Year's Day from the CoolCalifornia Challenge.
How did Tom do it? First, he joined
the CoolCalifornia Challenge at www.cachallenge.org. On the Challenge website, he began to look at the way that making energy upgrades in his home could help his wallet. "The cheap and easy stuff is weather-stripping and checking insulation. Next, is replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent ones. Then I got timers and occupancy sensors to automatically turn on and off lights."
Once Tom started to see the effect on his electric bill, he was hooked. "I wanted to go to the next level: I got a meter to measure how much energy each appliance was using... You would be amazed at all the energy wasted by those "vampires" when you aren't looking! That made me aware of how much energy went into our side by side refrigerator. That got replaced with a new Energy Star frig, with a rebate!"
Tom's hard work paid off in more ways than one, and it could pay off for you too!

City Receives 2015 Engineering Achievement Award for the Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase I
|
T
he City of South Pasadena received the 2015 Engineering Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Basin Section of the California Water Environment Association for the Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase I at the CWEA's annual award dinner on Saturday, January 23, 2016. The City received the award for achieving significant cost savings and minimizing construction-related disruptions to the City by utilizing trenchless lining technology wherever possible.
The Sewer Rehabilitation and Replacement Project Phase I addressed the City's aging sewer collection system. The project used Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining to repair approximately 64,000 lineal feet of pipe without trenching the street, saving time and money. The project also used open trench replacement of approximately 4,000 lineal feet of 6-inch and 8-inch pipe. The improvements made will increase the reliability of the system for the next 50 years. The project was funded through a low-interest loan through a Clean Water State Revolving Fund. Click here for more information...
