Each spring, we honor those who have been nominated and selected as our employees of the year for their outstanding service. EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Ann Chung
Margaret Landell Elementary School

Ann has been a devoted educator in the Landell community for the last 24 years, teaching third, fourth, and fifth grades. She is also the Student Council advisor and works with student leaders to organize schoolwide philanthropic and campus beautification projects. Her passion, hard work, and dynamic personality have had a lasting impact on the students she serves. As one of her students shared, “She always puts a seed of inspiration in each student’s heart....”

Ellen Basile
Technology Services Lead
Maintenance/Operations, Transportation, & Technology

Ellen is a dedicated, student-centered employee who has contributed to the success of the Cypress School District on many levels. During the pandemic, she was instrumental in getting devices into the hands of students so they could continue their learning remotely. When families had technical difficulties, Ellen and her team were on the frontlines to ensure they received the assistance they needed to support their child's success.
ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR
Rena Gibbs, Ed.D.
Coordinator, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Services

Dr. Gibbs promotes the success of all students by supporting a high-quality, evidence-based instructional program districtwide. She coordinates all core and supplemental instructional programs, state and district assessments, teacher professional development, instructional technology, and the English learner program. She has also been instrumental in advancing the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Support which provides leveled intervention to address student needs.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES
Tracy Cunanan
A.E. Arnold Elementary School

Tracy is committed to the success of all students! She promotes a positive school culture through her leadership in managing the Arnold ROAR store. According to students, she spends weekends buying inventory so they can “spend” the positive behavior points they earn in school.
Hilda Gurrola
Clara J. King Elementary School

Hilda creates lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners and ensures all students maximize their full potential. However, what she loves most about teaching are the relationships she builds with her students. As one student put it, “I wish I could stay in her class forever!”
Ashley Finney
Steve Luther Elementary School

Ashley has been a first-grade teacher for eight years and has a big heart for students. Outside the classroom, she volunteers on several school committees and serves as Luther’s lead teacher for STEM. Her colleagues appreciate her leadership and support on campus!
Deborah Moss
Juliet Morris Elementary School

Deborah has been a dedicated teacher in Cypress for 22 years. As a kindergarten teacher, she sets the stage for young students to become successful lifelong learners. In the words of her students, “Mrs. Moss teaches us a lot of new things. She makes everything we do fun!”
Alexandra Tucker
Frank Vessels Elementary School

Allie is willing to do whatever it takes to support her students and shows that same level of commitment in helping her colleagues. She also has top-notch organizational skills which do not go unnoticed by her students, as one of them so aptly stated, “She keeps us on track!”

Sokhonn Chhiv, Custodian
Frank Vessels Elementary School

Sokhonn is respected and treasured by all who know him. He has a strong work ethic, takes pride in his job, and loves serving students, staff, and the school community. One staff member noted, “He gives 100 percent in everything he does and does everything with a smile!”
Paula Crego, Clerk Typist III
Human Resources

Paula is a team player and willing to assume additional duties in her department to support her colleagues. She loves to learn new things and receive training to enhance her level of knowledge in the district. Her attitude is the more you know the more you grow!
Francine Garvin, Health Assistant
A. E. Arnold Elementary School

Francine has a great rapport with students, staff, and parents alike! Her kind and calm demeanor makes everyone feel welcome in the school office. She is very knowledgeable about local resources and always eager to share information to support her school community.
