Black inventors you didn't learn about in history class
The Black community is responsible for discoveries and creations that have shaped our world. From technical advances to everyday objects, Black inventors have contributed to multiple industries. Read about some of our favorites below:
Lyda Newman: In 1898, Newman received a patent for the first hairbrush with synthetic bristles. Unlike most brushes at the time, which were made with animal hair, Newman's invention was more hygienic and more useful for Black women. She was an advocate for Black women in her work as a hairdresser and as a leader in the Women's Suffrage Movement.
Marie Van Brittan Brown: In the 1960's, Brown felt uncomfortable in her neighborhood. She took matters into her own hands by inventing a closed-circuit home security system which monitored visitors via camera and projected their images onto a television monitor.
Dr. Marian Croak: If you have used Zoom or Skype, you have Dr. Croak to thank! She is responsible for many advancements in network engineering, but is most known for her work on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) which is the technology used for for remote conferencing.

Comprehensive sex education is violence prevention
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Boundaries, communication, consent, and sexual health are all critical aspects of preventing teen dating violence. Our Violence Prevention team has created a robust curriculum to teach sex education in local schools!
Comprehensive sex education enables students to learn about consent and determine their boundaries in a neutral environment. Effectively taught sex educations empowers students to gain the knowledge, confidence, and communication skills to make healthy relationship choices and seek support if a relationship is harmful.
Hallie Cohen, our Violence Prevention Educator, details the need for sex education and addresses common misconceptions in this blog post.

Flying Fish Swim School awarded grant
The $4,000 grant will go toward the Flying Fish Swim School’s efforts to provide free or reduced-cost swim lessons to local families who otherwise would not be able to afford lifesaving swim instruction.
The Flying Fish aquatics program at YWCA Evanston/North Shore is committed to teaching all children to swim through the Flying Fish Swim School and offering them opportunities to grow in the sport through the Flying Fish Swim Team.
Each year we ask YWCA clients and program participants to describe what YWCA means to them. Here’s some of what they’ve shared:
"Swimming at YWCA gives meaningful purpose to our kids' endeavors. With events like Swim Marathon and Oz Relay, your program is about much more than just swimming."
"Since completing your YWCA equity workshops, I’ve sought out other seminars, books, speaker, and movies about race. I have a strong desire and obligation to engage in conversations about race and I’m doing that more and more."
"The services my children and I received at Mary Lou’s Place profoundly changed our lives. We found safe, stable housing at the shelter; we were fed, nurtured and supported throughout our stay. And now, I receive walk-in counseling services for free. YWCA helped me reclaim my self-esteem and breathe, knowing the violence in my life is gone."
"Since attending YWCA’s financial education workshops, I think differently about how I spend money. I’m saving more and I’m able to manage my credit cards. I feel like a different person!"
Your gift creates impact!
Please give now and help someone find their YW.

Join us for our Racial Equity Workshops this March
Consciously or not, all of us carry biases toward individuals or groups. Participants will learn how to name what is implicit and step into accountability in order to manage bias in themselves and the places they live and work.
This workshop explores: what privilege is, who has it and how it works for them, as well as how power and privilege are connected, and how the misuse of power and privilege become oppression. This session will be for board members of any organization who are interested in understanding privilege as it relates to their work on the board.
All workshops are currently virtual and the cost per workshop is $100.

Introducing our new Equity Learning Sessions
Since 2016, we've held an annual Equity Summit, bringing together community members and equity practitioners to share emerging frameworks, models, and practices with the hopes of advancing racial equity and transforming our communities.
This year, instead of a two-day convening, we are sponsoring unique learning sessions throughout the year led by community facilitators and special guests.
