Black pioneers in health and wellness
Did you know that Black History Month has a theme each year? The 2022 theme is Black Health and Wellness, which focuses on the legacy of Black healthcare workers as well as Black experts in naturopathy and holistic medicine.
Despite systemic racism and bias, Black people continue to provide community care and create innovations that better the health of all people. Below are just a few examples of Black excellence in health care:
Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett: Dr. Corbett is one of the NIH's leading scientists that worked to develop the Moderna vaccine against COVID-19. An expert viral immunologist, she continues to work towards new vaccine research for universal coronavirus protection and treatment.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler: Dr. Crumpler was the first Black woman in America to earn a medical degree. After completing her degree in 1864, she focused on treating Black communities, poor communities, and formerly enslaved people. Her work encouraged more Black Americans to seek medical training.
Mary Kenner: Kenner was a lifelong inventor. In 1957, she received a patent for her invention of the sanitary belt, used to hold sanitary napkins in place before adhesive pads were invented. This revolutionary product excited companies, but once they found out she was Black they declined to work with her. Although she never achieved the notoriety she deserved, her inventions paved the way for modern menstrual products.

You can help survivors of domestic violence right now. Here's how:
Urge Illinois state lawmakers to increase funding for domestic violence survivors
Governor Pritzker has introduced the state budget for the 2023 fiscal year. In his proposed budget, additional funding for domestic violence programs across Illinois has decreased from $50 million to just $400,000. This budget cut would severely limit the capacity of YWCA and other organizations to sustain emergency services and teach the community about violence prevention.
Illinois survivors of domestic violence need your help! Contact the members of the Illinois House and Senate Appropriations Committees and your local officials and tell them that domestic violence survivors deserve more!
Tell your U.S. Senators to cosponsor and pass the Violence Against Women Act
The bipartisan Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is lifesaving legislation that provides critical resources and supports for all survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
If passed, this bill enhances and expands services for survivors, particularly important as providers continue to adapt and address increasing needs resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It also invests in prevention efforts, expands access in rural areas and for survivors requiring culturally-specific services as well as establishes a grant program to support LGBTQ survivors during the most vulnerable times in their lives.
Please give today to support domestic violence survivors
Funding for domestic violence programs saves lives! State funding provides safety and stability for thousands of survivors each year.
- emergency shelter, legal services, and safety planning for survivors
- violence prevention and healthy relationship classes for youth in our community
- supportive and resilient staff that understand the needs of survivors and their families
Give today, to ensure that survivors in our communities will receive the care and support they need now. Your gift to YWCA will provide safety, support, stability and hope for survivors and their children. Your gift, in any amount, makes a difference so please don’t wait.

Introducing our new Equity Learning Sessions
Since 2016, we've held an annual Equity Summit, bringing together community members and equity practitioners to share emerging frameworks, models, and practices with the hopes of advancing racial equity and transforming our communities.
This year, instead of a two-day convening, we are sponsoring unique learning sessions throughout the year led by community facilitators and special guests.

Join us for our winter Racial Equity Workshops
Many nonprofits are working to increase racial equity and justice in the communities they serve, but struggle with applying an equity lens to their own internal operations. In this workshop you will explore key concepts of racial equity and inclusion, and how they intersect with your organization’s core values.
Consciously or not, all of us carry biases toward individuals or groups. Participants will learn how to name what is implicit and step into accountability in order to manage bias in themselves and the places they live and work.
This workshop explores: what privilege is, who has it and how it works for them, as well as how power and privilege are connected, and how the misuse of power and privilege become oppression. This session will be for board members of any organization who are interested in understanding privilege as it relates to their work on the board.
All workshops are currently virtual and the cost per workshop is $100.
