The Presbytery of New Hope
Mission Statement

PCUSA Cross Symbol In RESPONSE to God's call in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the mission of the Presbytery of New Hope is to ENABLE local congregations, and Presbytery as a whole, to FUNCTION effectively as the body of Christ by actively EXPLORING, FACILITATING, EQUIPPING, and ESTABLISHING appropriate ministries with the covenant community and beyond.

Over the years, I've heard a lot of people say a lot of interesting things about technology in the church.
There's one big problem with all these statements: they forget that the church has already been saved by Jesus. They repeat the classic problem of the church for a new generation, forgetting that all our human tools of language, translation, and even technology are only instruments through which we are empowered to join in making God's work known to the world.

A former "digital missioner" put all this in helpful perspective:

If you want to learn to minister online, the challenge is to align your existing ministry instincts with this new environment.... Technology is comparatively straightforward and continues to get easier to use. It's people who are complicated, and your training and experience indicate that you likely already know something about connecting with people. Moreover, technology isn't the source of the power of these ministries. It's true that the method of interactive communication online allows us to reach more (and more varied) people. But it's the message of the gospel, of God's transforming love, that will matter for those people. ( Kyle Matthew Oliver)

The Presbytery of New Hope has invested in supporting this kind of technology work in inviting me to take up this work among you, helping our congregations deepen their practice of living out the gospel by using God's gifts of technology to connect us to our world and one another in new ways.
  • Is your session or congregation exploring how technology can be a tool for ministry and yet missing the point of how it needs to connect to the life of the congregation?
  • Are you wondering how to revamp or revitalize some element of your congregation's technology to help make it a better instrument of God's mission?
  • Does your church seem too small/too rural/too old for technology to matter? (Wayne Sankarlal would certainly disagree with you.)
  • Are you intimidated by all the options before you and need help finding the best way forward?
If I can help you make better use of the gifts of technology in your congregation to deepen your ministry there, please let me know. I will be planning some workshops and conversations in the coming months so that we can explore some of these questions together as a presbytery, but I especially want to hear from you about what might be useful in those workshops-and how I can assist in your work in the meantime. Drop me an email at [email protected], give me a call at 919-322-0143 x. 108, or find me whatever way is easiest for you!

Hurricane Matthew Information and Cancellations

Many of us throughout eastern North Carolina have been closely watching the development of Hurricane  Matthew over the last few days. Several events planned for this weekend in the presbytery have been cancelled or postponed:
  • The Middle School Retreat at Camp Don Lee this weekend has been cancelled.
  • The Presbyterian Women Fall Gathering at Unity Church in Newton Grove has been cancelled. The women of Unity are unable to reschedule for the fall, but they will host a future gathering.
The Disaster Assistance Team of the presbytery has made several resources available for congregations to prepare for the storm. Protect, Prepare, and Connect now so that you can be ready for whatever may come our way! For additional information, contact Bill Neely, chair of the Disaster Assistance Team, at [email protected].

On a broader scale, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has established a page for information and giving to support response throughout the areas affected by Matthew. Presbyterian mission co-worker in Haiti Cindy Corell has shared her updates on the situation there.

Please hold in your prayers in these days all those whose lives are affected by this storm.

Parking
Parking is available at the church and in a satellite parking lot just north of the church.  However, the church respectfully requests that all persons who can walk one block use the parking lot at Captain George's Seafood Restaurant located at 705 South Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948.  Directional signage will be placed to direct you to this parking lot, and parking attendants will be available to assist you.  The restaurant has generously offered its parking lot to the Presbytery on October 22, and this is the same location where lunch will be served and where breakout sessions will be held.  However, please also feel free to park in the church lot or the satellite lot if that is more convenient for you.

The St. John's Bible Is Coming to the Kirk of Kildaire in Cary

In 1998,   Saint John's Abbey  and University in Collegeville, Minnesota, commissioned renowned calligrapher and senior scribe to Queen Elizabeth, Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible in the English language - the first of this monumental size to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in more than 500 years. All 73 books from the Old and New Testaments (NRSV) were made using the traditional materials such as vellum, ancient inks, gold and silver leaf and platinum, and were written with quill pens fashioned from goose, turkey, and swan feathers. The project took 15 years to complete, with a team of 7 artists and 7 calligraphers, under the direction of Donald Jackson.

We will have the Gospel/Acts volume of the  St. John's Bible at the Kirk on Sunday, October 30. Reverend Dr. Ann Laird Jones, arts ministry director at Montreat Conference Center will lead a program from  4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The program is suitable not only for adults but for children who are in elementary school and older. Since materials are needed, please RSVP to the Kirk office (919-467-49440) by October 23.  Plan to bring friends and neighbors or a group from your church to this very special event. Light refreshments will be provided. If you have questions, contact Melinda Merkley King at  [email protected]
