President's Letter

Mount students and Dr. Miserandino show their spirit of service and give blood at the semi-annual Blood Drive organized by Campus Ministry.
Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,

While there is no official theme to this edition of the Mount Newsletter you will see one emerge just based upon the talent and caring reflected in the people featured: Leadership.

The leadership you will see emerges from the hard work and dedication that flows from the shared vision of life at the Mount --students and alums just doing best what they have learned in the classrooms and fields of the Mount.

First, our alums: The production of Aida is made possible by the generous support of Don DeCarlo '56. Don is a member of the School Directory and has a passion for the arts. Mike Mullen '76 challenged the Mount to enter unfamiliar territory -economic analysis-and our students did not disappoint.

On the track, Marty Helmsley '80 ensured the success of our team by sharing his resources and love of running. Andrew Boryga '09 was honored as the outstanding artist at Cornell for his extraordinary writing achievements.

Our current students have continued to shine in the college admissions arena. You will meet Jeron Fenton '13 and take pride in his selection as a Millenium Gates Scholar in this nationally prestigious competition. Jeron also had a great set of races at the Penn Relays: he is a terrific example of our commitment to the scholar-athlete at the Mount.

Lastly, don't miss the testimony of Ralph Jardine '84 on why he gives to the Mount. He gets the last word in this issue on his motivation for giving to the Mount. His guidance by example brings us back to where I began: Leadership.

As I like to say, "We do great work with great kids." As you read on, I am sure you will agree.

Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Jeron Fenton '13 pulled an Ivy League hat trick, and was accepted into Brown University, Princeton University and Cornell University....and that is not all! He was wait-listed for Harvard!

Jeron Fenton '13: Gates Millenium Scholar and Ivy League Bound!

Says Jeron, "I feel blessed! The teachers at Mount really inspired me and kept me motivated both inside and out of classroom.  I feel that because of my hard work here at Mount I will be able to reap the considerable benefits of the college I choose."  And Jeron has chosen Princeton!

During his time at the Mount, Jeron was a recipient of the Kissane Family Scholarship, an endowed scholarship created by Mr. Jim Kissane '84 and his family for eligible Mount Students!

Mount Students Win Stonehill Challenge By Problem Solving College Level Business Case

Team Yankees!

From bottom: Markony Mora '14, Keith Ignacio '14,

Donovan Salmon '15, Matthew Barrett '15,

Niall McGeever '14 and Corey Seaton '15

CONGRATULATIONS to our Mount "Team Yankees," winners of the

first Stonehill Challenge!! The Mount team competed against "Team Red Sox," from a Boston, MA high school.  Juniors Keith Ignacio, Sam Oliver, Markony Mora and Niall McGeever and Sophomores Donovan Salmon, Matthew Barrett and Corey Seaton put in about 20 hours outside of class and a whole lot of brain muscle during the 7 days they worked on the case study: the cash-strapped brother-sister owned Kodiak Bear Lodge in Alaska.

The Challenge was for the team to research, analyze and problem solve the case and then offer realistic suggestions to the owners: sell the lodge, bring in an investor, or keep their business and make it work.

The Kodiak Bear Lodge case was created by alum Michael Mullen  '76, an Assistant Professor of Business at Stonehill College in Easton, MA. Mullen's students from Stonehill's Mu Omega chapter of Beta Alpha Psi National Honor Society for Accounting Majors also helped design the case as part of their submission for the 2013 Ernst and Young Diversity Award Challenge. Their task: show the everyday applications of the accounting profession so that high school students in highly diverse regions would be aware of the potential skills they already have if they want to pursue studies in the accounting and finance professions. Keep Reading

School Play Aida Brings Down the House!

L to R: Vanessa Rigan, Dianara Perez, Greogry Pope-Vives,
Rajord Dempster, Nathan Fonseca, Sadeera Payne

The Mount Players production of Aida: School Edition, leaves the audiences wanting more!  The rock-musical with music by Elton John and Tim Rice tells the tale of a Nubian slave named Aida who has to choose between the love of her country and her people or the emotions she has for her captor, Egyptian Captain, Radames. Radames, the future leader of Egypt, is betrothed to Amneris, the Pharaoh's daughter, and his attraction to Aida causes great conflict.  This forbidden love ends with heartbreak as they are buried together in a tomb under the sands of Egypt, leaving Amneris to rule Egypt, alone. Don't worry, descendants of Aida and Radames meet thousands of years later.

Senior Mitchell Marrero eloquently portrayed Radames with power, passion and emotion-filled vocals; senior EJ Rios skillfully played Zoser, the scheming and manipulative father of Radames; senior Angela Fragale from Preston HS seamlessly portrayed the heart and humor of the show as Amneris; and Sophomore Joelle Encarnacion from Preston HS captured the heart of the audience as her power vocals and ability to evoke such deep emotion captivated them both performances.

Senior Mitchell Marrero eloquently portrayed Captain Radames

Freshman, Nathan Fonseca, gave strong vocals and an endearing, memorable portrayal of Mereb. The crew was methodically and efficiently lead by Senior Luke Barlow and Junior, Sergio Orellana.

Other standout performances came from Nicholas Moreno (Pharaoh), Kadeem Foote (Amonasro), Irene Nwankpa from SCA (Nehebka), Michael Nieves, Nicholas Vazquez, and the rest of the cast and crew. Special mention to Mitchell Marrero, EJ Rios, Nicholas Moreno, Angela Fragale and Penelope Golden who have been part of the Mount players since their freshman year!

Aida was another triumph for the Mount Players and the Mount community.  Congratulations to Mr. Thomas O'Sullivan (Director/Choreographer), Mr. Stephen Ferri (Musical Director). Mr. Thomas Furano (Set Design) and to the entire cast and crew who worked tirelessly on this performance!  A special and heartfelt thank you goes out to Don DeCarlo '56, whose vision and annual committment to the Mount Players makes possible outstanding performances like Aida.

Fellowships Awarded to Mount Faculty

Mr. Thomas Eikamp

Congratulations to Thomas Eikamp, Chairperson of the Theology Department, on his being awarded a fellowship to participate in the Bearing Witness Program and to Mr. Joseph Hummel, Vice Principal, who was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship for study this summer in New York State.

The Bearing Witness™ Program is a unique professional development opportunity for Catholic school educators. In 1996, the ADL's Washington, D.C. Regional Office created Bearing Witness to provide Catholic school educators with the training and resources necessary to teach their students about the historical relationship between Jewish and Catholic communities and the impact of that relationship on Catholic teaching, catechesis and liturgy.

Through Bearing Witness, participants explore the history of anti-Semitism, from biblical times to modern day. Themes include the role of the Church during the Holocaust, recent changes in Catholic teachings on Jews and Judaism, issues of prejudice in contemporary society and practic

al strategies for teaching students about the Holocaust and anti- Semitism. Bearing Witness is endorsed by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

This NEH Fellowship is titled, Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop: Clinton's Ditch: The Erie Canal in Western New York and will be held at Niagara Community College in Sanborn, NY

Mount Baseball Team Heads To Boston

Mount Baseball Team at Fenway Park in Boston, MA

Mount St. Michael baseball has a long and storied tradition. There have been many championships won over the years on Howie Smith Field, but more importantly many shared memories and life lessons amongst our baseball Mountaineers. Mount still fields teams from the junior high, freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels. The program is still strong and vibrant.

Coach Wally Stampfel's 2013 varsity team is led by Jonathan Cardona, Aaron Sosa, Ryan Aponte, and Alex Pena. Three sophomore call up's, Geovanny Henriquez, Angel Ramirez, and Christian Valdez will provide depth this year and the promise for a continuance of a strong and winning program in the years to come.

Interscholastic sports is not all about winning at the Mount. Many of our teams learn from  travelling and performing community service in the community. One example of a team learning experience came in April when the Mount varsity baseball team travelled to play another Marist Brother High School... Central Catholic HS in Andover Massachusetts. This trip was nearly cancelled because the Boston area was in lockdown due to the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. The team voted unanimously to follow the lead of Bostonians and not to give into terror- they would go on with the trip as planned to play Central Catholic on Saturday. Keep Reading

The Mount team cleverly split the elements of the case among them into quantitative and qualitative work streams.  The "challenge" was squarely on the shoulders of the Mount's "Team Yankees."  Keith and Sam created an income model in excel, while Matthew, Corey,  Donovan  and Niall worked on analyzing the pros and cons of any decision that the Lodge owners would make. Mark Mora wrote up the entire case, synthesizing the research from all of the team members.

Students in  Beta Alpha Psi at Stonehill acted as consultants to the team via Skype video meetings but only for direction and support, while they were coached on the Mount side by Development Director Julie Androshick Boyle, whose background includes a specialization in business consulting and an expertise in strategic communications.

Says Mullen, "What the Mount does in educating students from a grounded perspective gives students the tools to tackle the demands and rigor of a college level business curriculum. The whole point is to make students aware of the dynamics of a business curriculum. The Mount's high level focus in math,  history, science and especially written and oral communications are the underpinnings for success in college and beyond.

Mullen is hoping to expand the challenge next year to more high schools in the northeast and possibly nationally if the idea gets picked up by other chpaters of Beta Alpha Psi.

Below is the notification letter from Stonehill:

Congratulations! Your "Team Yankees" of Mount St. Michael Academy have

won the 2013 Stonehill Challenge. The senior faculty of the Business Adminishation Department of Stonehill College independently reviewed your case submission.

The judges  April felt that your submission was very well written, well thought through and insightful. I must share with you that there were some concerns expressed internally that this case study may be too difficult for high school students. Well, you hit it out of the park" and proved them wrong.

In fact, our depatment chair, Professor Debra Salvucci, was so impressed

that she has committed the department to paying your application fee in the

event you decide to submit an application for admission to Stonehill College.

As a Mount grad, I hope you do!

In the coming week so myself, representatives of Mu Omega and an alumni from Stonehill currently in the field of accounting will visit the Mount to present to you, your team mates and the Mount an award bearing your names, a certificate to you recognizing your achievement and a donation on Mu Omega's behalf to support the outstanding level of academics at the Mount.

I look forward to meeting you in person. Until then, please share the good news with your friends and family. This is a terrific achievement!

Sincerely,

Michael G.

Anton Porter '15, 200 M Dash Champion of New York Relays

At the April 25-27  New York Relays, Anton Porter '15 outdueled the best track athletes that New York City had to offer for two days and won the 200 meter dash in a time of 21.61 seconds.  His honor for winning this event was a Hugh prestigious plaque. Track and Field News.

 P
ENN RELAYS

At the April 27-28 Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia, our 4 x 100 Meter Relay team of Kasim Thomas, Anton, Andrew White and Tavon Nowell broke the school record and qualified for the finals.

The following day the foursome broke the school record again and set a CHSAA record in the process running 42.32 seconds.  The Mount and Holy Cross are the only CHSAA teams to ever make it to the finals at Penn Relays in that event.  Although they did not medal it was a great accomplishment to run against all the Jamaican teams. They are still ranked #1 in the state.

The Mount 4 x 400 Relay team of Jeron Fenton '13, Anton Porter '15, Jeffrey Jones and Dorwin Mitchell was 9 hundredths of a second from bringing home a gold medal and plaque.  They ran their best time of the year which was 3 minutes 24 second to take home the silver.

BaseballBaseball

The team was disappointed that their Friday night trip to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox play was cancelled. Gratefully the bombing suspect on the run was apprehended and the team played the game on Saturday and had dinner in Faneuil Hall that night.

The teams prayers were answered on Sunday after attending mass at Robert Bellarmine Church in Boston. The Red Sox had agreed to honor the thirty tickets Mount had reserved for Friday's game on Sunday afternoon! The boys spent a sun drenched afternoon enjoying the game and completing what proved to be a great learning and enjoyable memory.

Boryga '09Boryga

After taking a creative writing course in his sophomore year at Cornell, he fell in love with fiction and devoted himself to the craft. Boryga's fiction is partly autobiographical and offers an unsentimental glimpse of life through the eyes of youth quickly coming of age in a complex, hostile and often neglected environment. His stories capture the ambivalence, absurd humor, casual violence and emotional turmoil of lives restricted by poverty and inner city life, and touches upon subjects such as sexuality, ethnicity, education, law enforcement and contradictory societal norms.

His fiction has been published in The Susquehanna Review, The North Central Review and The Cornell Daily Sun. In addition to the Coxe Award, he received the Arthur Lynn Andrew Prize for fiction from the Creative Writing Program in 2011.

Professor of English Stephanie Vaughn, who nominated Boryga for the award, said: "We in creative writing have every reason to believe that Andrew Boryga will become a new important voice in American fiction, doing for his Puerto Rican neighborhood in the Bronx what Junot Daz has done for the New Jersey neighborhood known as London Terrace - giving voice to a largely invisible, sometimes caricatured community operating on the ragged edges of an urban neighborhood, where the poor live only minutes from the rich, but the minutes seem like light years."

The Cornell Council for the Arts presents the annual citation and monetary award of $1,000 to an outstanding undergraduate student in the arts who has demonstrated talent and dedication, and has realized notable achievements in one or more artistic disciplines while at Cornell.
