El Carnaval de San Pedro is one of the biggest carnivals in Belize which traditions that date back to the 19th century. From Italy, the custom spread to Spain, Portugal, and France and, through colonization, to the Caribbean, Latin America and parts of North America. The carnival of Cádiz, Spain, even now one of the best known, was particularly influential in shaping the traditions that would later predominate in San Pedro.
Under the theme Vivelo y Gozalo, the festivities started on Saturday, February 22nd with official ceremonies along with a block party and culminated with the symbolic
burning
of Don Juan Carnaval (the celebration’s patron) on Wednesday, February 26th.

Artist from Belize comes to LA to honor Kobe Bryant with his paintings
|
February 26, 2020.
Vendors swarmed Figueroa Street selling souvenirs in honor of Kobe Bryant. There was one man's stand in particular that stood out to people walking by as he painted. Only thing was that his paintings are not for sale to the public.
"I have no intention of selling it to the public. This gotta end up at the right place because I have too much value for it. It's not about money or fame, it's about leaving a legacy for my number one team, which is Lakers and let them also enjoy," said Alex Sanker, an artist who travelled from Belize to paint outside of the memorial for Kobe Bryant.
With some of Sanker's family being in Los Angeles, and his respect for Kobe Bryant he has been a Lakers fan for years.
"He did a lot...he did a lot for the sport in general and the world is mourning, so I wanted to do something that stands out," said Sanker.

Recommendations from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention on the Coronavirus
|
February 26, 2020
. While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat:
- It’s currently flu and respiratory disease season and CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
- If you are a healthcare provider, be on the look-out for people who recently traveled from China and have fever and respiratory symptoms.
- If you are a healthcare provider caring for a COVID-19 patient or a public health responder, please take care of yourself and follow recommended infection control procedures.
- If you have been in China or have been exposed to someone sick with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you will face some limitations on your movement and activity. Please follow instructions during this time. Your cooperation is integral to the ongoing public health response to try to slow spread of this virus. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient.
- For people who are ill with COVID-19, please follow CDC guidance on how to reduce the risk of spreading your illness to others.

The Great Backyard Bird Count
|
February 18, 2020.
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is an annual citizen science activity for birders of all ages and experiences! From February 14th-Feb 17th, the Belize Audubon Society went out birding with schools of the protected area's buffer communities as well as with the
Scout Association of Belize
in Belize City. Children had a terrific time and learned the basics of birding like bird identification, how to use binoculars, and recording a checklist. All sightings were then submitted to
birdcount.org
.
Each GBBC checklist helps researchers at the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology
learn more about how birds are doing, and how to protect them and the environment we share.

The New York Times lists Belize as a Perfect "Spring Break" Destination
|
|
February 25, 2020.
For many families in winter, escaping the cold is top of mind. Gary Leff, whose blog
View From The Wing
focuses on travel deals and maximizing frequent flier miles, encourages people to travel farther afield — whether it’s Mexico, Central America or elsewhere in Latin America. His reasoning? It’s cheaper to be on the ground there, so airfare gets amortized across several nights, and offset by savings on hotel, meals and activities. He notes that Costa Rica and Belize can be reached with United Airlines miles, flying on their partners Avianca (via Bogotá) and Copa (via Panama City).

Belizean Star of the Month!
Dr. Kareem Usher

|
|
|
Dr. Usher was born in Belize City and attended Grace Primary School on Amara Avenue. He then went on to St. John's College for high school and St. John's College Sixth Form where he graduated in 1994. Upon receiving an opportunity to continue his studies in the United States, he attended Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Dr. Usher returned home for two years and worked for the Belize Tourism Industry Association and later the Belize Family Court where he served as Coordinator, before returning to the United States to pursue his Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the University of Louisville. He later earned his doctoral degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
After graduating from Florida State, he worked as a Post-doctoral Research for one year with the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University. The following year, he joined the faculty at the Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture (at Ohio State University) as an Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning. He conducts research on urban food systems, particularly where it intersects with food access, social justice, regional governance and community, and economic development. His work involves compassion as a planning approach and utilizes community-based participatory research methodologies to explore perceived as well as objective measures of access to healthy food by food-insecure families in low-access (‘food gap’) communities.

"Growing up in Belize, I learned self-discipline, respect for myself and others and humility, which are virtues that I continue to exercise in all aspects of my life."
|
1. How long have you been in the US?
I have lived in the United States for 20 years.
2. What part of Belize are you from? Did that influence the way you live your life today?
I was born and nurtured in Belize City. Growing up in Belize has certainly influenced the way I live my life. The Belizean culture has taught me to consider how my actions affect others and to persevere through difficulties. I learned how to make "do with less". In completing a task, I pay attention to details and always do the best I can, given available resources. Growing up in Belize, I learned self-discipline, respect for myself and others and humility, which are virtues that I continue to exercise in all aspects of my life.
3. Discuss the way/ways you are giving back to Belize.
As a professor of city and regional planning at The Ohio State University, my contributions to Belize over the past years have been through research. I have partnered with the Belize Association of Planners (BAP) to develop a report (along with my students) on connecting parks and water-ways in Belize City for resiliency. Along with BAP, SJCJC, YMCA and the Belize Health Department, I directed a study abroad course where my students worked on small local projects such as working with rural (Maskall Village, Nagobac, St. Anne's, Corozalito and Santana) and urban (Belize City) community health workers to deliver care, re-design the SJCJC campus to mitigate flooding and develop a recreational area for students, and to conduct a neighbourhood planning project in the area bounded by Haulover Creek to Water Lane, and from East Collet Canal (Fish Market) to East Canal (Bus Station). Incidentally, I spent my formative years in this area; I lived on Mosul Street. I have also conducted research in Q'eqchi'-Mopan Maya villages in the Toledo District - Jalacte, Santa Cruz and Aguacate.
I hope to continue and to be able to do more for Belize. My plan is to create a research centre ('think tank') in Belize that would conduct town and village planning for every settlement in the country as well as research in order to inform social and developmental policies - that is, planning for sustainability; how many houses to build and where should they be built; transportation planning; hazard mitigation planning; and others.
