Message from Superintendent Juan Cruz

Dear Franklin-McKinley community,

We appreciate your partnership as we begin a new school year! We are proud to provide our students and families with the resources and encouragement to develop a college mindset.

The journey to higher education begins as soon as parents and guardians prioritize their child’s education. Early childhood education and robust elementary and secondary instruction are critical support systems that ensure children receive opportunities for higher education and the resources required to succeed. At FMSD, we believe that all students have the potential to excel in their education and career.

Many of our initiatives are focused on bringing knowledge and guidance to parents and guardians to empower them with the resources and opportunities so that their children can go to college or follow a career path.

The College in My Future savings program and the Spartan Promise are initiatives that provide important support to students and families with the goal of a higher education. I encourage you to learn more about these programs.

As educators, fostering an excellent learning environment and promoting access to college and university are priorities we work hard to materialize.

Thank you for supporting our district as we educate our students for a life of achievement.

Sincerely,

Juan Cruz

Superintendent

Our Summer Programs Were a Success!

This summer, FMSD welcomed 1,216 students across five campuses for our summer programming in partnership with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. These programs focused on academics, SEL (Social and Emotional Learning), and enrichment opportunities for all participants.

In addition to working closely with Catholic Charities supporting our classrooms, FMSD partnered with Elevate Math to provide targeted math instruction and partnered with Breakthrough to offer programming targeting computer engineering and math.

Our district was fortunate to also work with Audacity and San Jose Jazz, who provided podcasting and dance classes after summer programming. Thank you all for your support!

Summer Meal Distribution

Our district’s Child Nutrition Services had a busy summer!

When school lets out, low-income children across the country lose access to the school breakfasts, lunches, and after school snacks and meals they receive during the regular school year. The Summer Nutrition Program helps fill this gap by providing free breakfast, lunch, and snacks to children who might otherwise go hungry.

At Franklin-McKinley, we had the opportunity to serve over 6,500 breakfasts and over 11,500 lunches to our students and the community. We take pride in providing meals to all who need them!

This is our FMSD Child Nutrition Services Team! Thank you all!

Update About Our Amazing Facilities Projects

Enriching spaces, empowering lives! We want to share with you an update on the facilities projects completed during the summer, as shown in our facilities tour last August. We are working to create a vibrant, inclusive, inspiring environment for the schools and communities within the Franklin-McKinley School District. Our mission is to provide facilities that nurture learning, foster community engagement, and uplift lives.

Our summer projects throughout our schools included asphalt replacement, solar array installations, kinder areas, work in play areas and new play structures, parking lots, turf installations, outdoor learning spaces, field renovation, walking path refresh, perimeter fencing, new gates and fence, restroom renovation, marquee installation, additional camera and vape detection installation, and burglar alarm consolidation (district wide).

Our district thrives because of the collective efforts of dedicated individuals and partners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the advancement of education and community growth. Thank you!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15th to October 15th, we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the impactful contributions of the Latino community throughout the history of our nation. At FMSD, we value the traditions and culture of each one of our students, families and team members. We celebrate diversity and respect for each other’s identities.

This year’s theme is Building Prosperous and Healthy Communities. We appreciate the events and activities that our schools brought to life celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!

Enrolling at FMSD for Academic Success!

Our schools are welcoming new students! Enrollment is open!

Early education is what a child learns from birth to 8 years old. These are the years that we build a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Think of early learning as the building block for your child's future success. Our TK and kinder teachers understand this and work to bring out the best in every child.

Transitional Kindergarten

Children enrolled in Franklin-McKinley School District's amazing Transitional Kindergarten programs thrive in our engaging play-based environments.

We offer age-appropriate, hands-on, and play-based learning programs. Students are in a relaxed environment where learning is fun.

Academics are incorporated daily in an engaging way. Eighty per cent of the students who attend our TK programs go into kindergarten at or above grade level. We use games, music, and art to teach letters, numbers, shapes, and colors.

We spend much time teaching students how to identify and control emotions, share, take turns, and solve their problems. Exploration through pretend play offers students practice using the social-emotional skills that they learn. Second language learners are in a fun place to practice their English with their friends.

Kindergarten

Highlights of kindergarten:

  • Science of Reading-based literacy instruction with high rates of literacy growth
  • Literacy and math intervention for students that need support
  • Field trips
  • 1:1 technology
  • Highly qualified teachers
  • Para educators

Many of our schools have:

  • SEAL (Sobrato Early Academic Language) model that helps students develop English language and content learning
  • Little Heroes Coach
  • School gardens

Dual Language Immersion Programs

Dual Language Immersion is a unique educational program offered at FMSD that builds student bilingualism and biliteracy in two languages. We offer:

  • Spanish Dual Language Immersion
  • Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion

Dual Language Immersion Programs integrate native English speaking and target language learners (i.e. Vietnamese or Spanish speaking students) in the same classroom. The teacher provides academic instruction through two languages, one of which is the primary language of each group. Students continue to learn standards-based content while they become fluent in two languages; linguistically and academically.
