Clergy Reflection

Today, Thursday, April 29, is the feast of St. Catherine of Sienna. If you’ve never encountered St. Catherine before, she was a Spanish 14th century mystic. As a child, Catherine had a vision of Jesus, “seated in glory” with saints Peter, Paul, and John. Jesus smiled and blessed her, and from then on she spent most of her time in prayer. Her parents tried to encourage more age, gender, and class appropriate pursuits for a little girl from a wealthy family, but Catherine was determined. She cut off all her hair and stood firm until finally she was allowed to sequester herself in a dark room where she fasted and slept on boards. (From this description, I can kind of see why her parents were reluctant…)

The Caring for Creation Committee invites you to create a garden at home using native plants which will benefit your environment like the rain gardens are benefiting Redeemer’s grounds. Please use this form to order your gardens or shrubs by Friday, April 30 and then pick them up from our north parking lot on Saturday, May 8, 10:00 am to 12 noon. Payment in advance is appreciated.
A note about the pollinator gardens: The pollinator kits are intended to create a 20 sq. ft. garden and will include a planting plan with a sketch and care instructions. Each garden will contain 3 each of 5 different plants. Please see the order form for details.
Yesterday in ‘Wandering Wednesday Worship’ I offered a summary of an article that recently appeared in the New York Times entitled: “There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It is Called Languishing.” Researchers have noted that many of us are entering a new stage in our coping with the pandemic which they are labeling as languishing. It is not mental illness as it does not qualify as depression and yet it is not mental health as it impacts our sense of joy and sense of purpose. I have received much positive feedback from individuals who have been feeling this way and are now ‘relieved’ to know they are not alone. Therefore, I am sharing the link to the article. In addition, because yesterday was also “Read a Good Poem Day’, there is another link to a poem by Jonathan Greene call “Languishing” that paints with words a beautiful description of the emotional state.

This week’s Gospel reading is from John 15:1-8—in which John reminds us that Jesus had told his friends that he is the vine and God, his father, is the gardener. He also told them that they were the branches. We, too, are the branches growing out from the vine that is Jesus, and we strengthen and flourish in community with others. This Sunday, our 10:00 worship will be only on Zoom, because our annual meeting will be included in the worship. We will hear from our Rector, and some others active in parish leadership, with their reflections on the past few months and their vision as we move forward; and we will elect 4 new vestry members to help lead us. We as a congregation are certainly the branches growing, along with our leadership, out from the vine!
