Clergy Reflection

Dear Folks,

The Parish Day School is a principal ministry of The Church of the Redeemer. Founded 70 years ago with a commitment to the early childhood development of toddlers to preschoolers, last year the PDS Board and Redeemer Vestry committed to expanding this critical work through third grade. Former State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick helped us see that our program “completes early childhood education” by stretching to include nine-year-olds, and caught our enthusiasm for community engagement. As School Director Mary Knott and I described the on-going parish relationship with Govans Elementary School, just blocks from the Redeemer campus, Grasmick assured us that PDS already has what many independent schools only dream about. “Many speak about public-private partnerships,” said the seasoned educator and policy-maker, “but few actually realize this important and difficult work. You have something special. Build on the relationships you’ve already created through parish tutors at Govans, school to school exchanges at holidays, and BUILD organizing” with Sandi McFadden (Strong City’s Community School Coordinator). With a commitment to expand only if the school, the church, and the community benefit from the growth, excitement is growing.
Please join us in a service meditating on the Passion of Christ this Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. in the church. The service will include the reading of the Passion according to St. Luke and congregational hymns responding to the readings. This will be a moving way to continue your journey from the Triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday morning, through Holy Week.

Sundays for Children

Palm Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-- This Sunday, April 10, is Palm Sunday! Our Acting in Faith teachers and Liz Kallmyer will be in the front courtyard before the 10:00 service, inviting children to help hand out palms to arriving worshipers. When the service begins, those children will return to worship with their families. Our children’s programs, “Story Time” and “Acting in Faith,” will meet as usual following the Gospel reading; children will return to their families during the announcements.
A Walk Through Holy Week:.
On Good Friday, April 15, beginning at 11:00 a.m., consider adding depth and meaning to your Easter by participating in an event designed to help children— and adults who learn best through watching, moving and listening— to understand what happened in Jesus’ life during Holy Week, and how it leads us into Easter. While this experience is designed for children, participants may be any age. We will meet in the front courtyard. This annual event is led by young people, and helps all participants to get a sense of why Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter are the pivotal events of our faith journey. We will walk with a guide, and observe scenes representing parts of Jesus’ final week in Jerusalem.
Redeemer’s Easter Egg Hunt tradition continues!
On Easter Sunday, at 10:30 a.m., following the 9:00 service, we will have our annual Easter Egg hunt on the Redeemer Parish Day School playground! Come around to the playground, near the raised courtyard, to hear directions and begin the hunt. There will be a section for children age 4 and under, and another area for children age 5 and above.. We look forward to seeing you at this fun celebration of Easter and spring.
Please register for Sunday School
Keep checking e-Redeemer, to stay informed as we figure out our next steps, and please register your children now, so we can keep in contact with your family. You can reach our 2021-2022 registration form by following this link.

Young adults at Redeemer (folks in their 20s and 30s) are invited to gather during the 7 weeks of Easter to read through the Gospel of Mark. At each meeting we will read a section of the Gospel and reflect on it. No academic expertise or experience in a Bible study required – questions and musings encouraged! Our desire is for the group to commit to meeting each week (recognizing, of course, that life happens!). If you would like to join us, send Rebecca an email to confirm so I make sure you get the relevant information. We’re also looking for folks to host, so if that is of interest, please let me know!

I’m struck by how often I hear folks talk about Baltimore as “The City” as if it were some remote place or abstract object. I invite you to participate in BUILD training to learn to engage people in meaningful one-to-one meetings, to sincerely listen to the needs of your neighbors, and to join with them in formulating and executing actions to effect real change.

If you do, I promise that Baltimore will have a new place in your heart as “My city, My People, Our City” .You will discover friendships and kindred spirits in ways and places you would not have thought possible. I have formed more inter-generational and cross-cultural friendships in the past 5 years because of BUILD than in the previous 50 years of my adult life.

During Lent our intercessory response is “This is the fast we choose”. If you haven’t yet, I would encourage you to read Isaiah Ch. 58 on the fast we are called to choose. Verse 12 particularly speaks to me about the reward that working for our city can bring.

Those from among you
Shall build the old waste places;
You shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach,
The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.

I ask you to take the first steps to claim your share of this blessing by participating in upcoming BUILD training and events. Keep watching this space for details.

After Sacred Ground, What’s Next?

To begin to answer the question of what’s next for Redeemer after completing Sacred Ground dialogue circles, the Vestry passed a motion at the February 2022 meeting to create a working group to research the history related to Redeemer’s land, buildings, and actions over time.

Resolved that a working group be appointed by the Rector to research the relationship between The Church of the Redeemer and (1) the institution of slavery, (2) the adoption of Jim Crow laws, and (3) other practices in Maryland that disenfranchise communities, and report to the Vestry within 18 months the effect of these relationships on the holdings, wealth, character, and mission of the Church of the Redeemer.

This working group is charged with research and discovery and to report to the congregation what the group has learned, inviting discussion and response. The Vestry invites you to participate in this important truth-telling by joining this workgroup. Please contact Keri Frisch for more information and/or to join the workgroup.
Calling all artists! It’s time to prepare for the fifth annual art show, “Rejoice in the Arts!”, which will run from the Feast of the Resurrection (Easter, 4/17) until Pentecost (6/5.) Once again, you are invited to help celebrate the 50 days of Eastertide by sharing works of art that evoke (broadly interpreted) themes of new life, Resurrection, creation, or God’s presence in our midst. Paintings, photography, fiber arts, collage, sculpture, and other visual arts are welcomed.

* This year’s show is open to artists of ALL ages. Parents, please speak with the young artists in your family about this opportunity to share their creativity with the parish!

* Artists who wish to do so will have the option of having their work marked for sale. In keeping with Redeemer’s commitment to community partnership, it is suggested that thirty percent (30%) of the proceeds from the sale of the art be donated to the Govans Elementary School for the purchase of art supplies.

Please note the following important details:
1) There are SPECIFIC guidelines for all art being submitted. These guidelines will be available in print on the table in the Narthex, or electronically by clicking HERE or by emailing your request to Leigh Lowe. We will not be able to include any submissions in the show which do not meet these guidelines.

2) Artwork will be collected at the church between Sunday, April 3 and Sunday, April 10. Due to the time needed to curate and hang the show, the delivery deadline for all art is no later than 11:45 on Palm Sunday, April 10. This is a firm deadline.

3) Any questions or delivery issues? We’re here to help! Please be in touch with: Leigh Lowe or Lucy Sarris.
