Clergy Reflection

Last Tuesday, I was part of a circle of women* gathered around the fireplace in our Parish Hall. We began our time together by reflecting on and sharing our answers to the questions: “What do you love most about winter? What do you find most challenging about winter?” Light, both the exquisite quality of it, and the lack of it, was a common refrain. The architecture and silhouettes of naked trees, another. Some of us love wearing winter clothes and sweaters; some miss gardening and warmer outdoor activity. All of us, it seemed, were grateful simply to be gathered together, masked and all, by the fireplace, which crackled and glowed.
We welcome the Rev. Dr. Allen F. Robinson as our guest preacher this Saturday and Sunday, as we celebrate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 15th Rector of Grace Church Brooklyn Heights, the Rev. Dr. Allen F. Robinson is a native of Galveston, TX, where he grew up attending St. Augustine of Hippo Episcopal Church. He is a gifted and passionate preacher and teacher and serves as a coach on congregational vitality. Dr. Robinson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from St. Augustine University, Raleigh, NC. He was ordained in the Diocese of Texas in 1995 after receiving his Master of Divinity degree at the Virginia Theological Seminary. In 2007, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree, with a dissertation on congregational development, from Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA. Previously, Dr. Robinson served as Rector at St. James’ Church, Lafayette Square in Baltimore.

It seems like just a day ago that I arrived, how quickly six months go by. I wanted to start by thanking you all for so graciously and kindly welcoming me into your community, and to Cristina+ and David+ for allowing me to come here as part of my discernment journey. I have loved every talk I have had with people here, the Christmas bonfires, the outside dance parties. More than anything I appreciate the caring feedback so many of you gave me after my sermons, and the support of my time of discernment and your prayers.

In my short time here, I have seen a caring community that reaches out in service to its local community. In my time here I have learned the value of approaching ministry with a sense of humor (dancing also works), as my true self, of taking time to connect and relax, and the centrality of the Eucharist and community building to my discernment, and my spiritual journey. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you; to learn and grow as part of this community. And if it is not too much of an imposition, I ask your prayers as I move forward in discernment. Wishing you every blessing.

Sincerely,
Nathan Harpine

The Bit Center (formerly the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland) has identified a need for 30 families in zip codes 21212, 21218, 21239 and 21214 all of whom have an immunocompromised family member and have had to stop working and handle school closures. The Bit Center can support these families by providing them with a 45 lb. box of food each week but they need financial support to do so. The cost of the food is $75 per week. If you are willing to adopt a family for the next 6-8 weeks please contact Monica Lapenta at the BitCenter.org.

Children at Church

Sundays for Children
We are continuing to bring children out of the service during the sermon for story time each week, then returning them to their families. This Sunday, we will celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King, and our stories will follow the theme. We will have blankets for the children in case it is chilly; they might also want jackets. For the safety of children and readers, we will try to stay outside; if the weather is too much of a challenge, we will sit in the front hall and keep a door partially open for ventilation.

Please register for Sunday School
If all goes well with vaccines for children under 12, and if our numbers begin to improve, we will be watching for opportunities to begin resuming Sunday school programs. Keep watching e-Redeemer, to stay informed as we figure out our next steps, and please register your children now, so we can keep in contact with your family. You can reach our 2021-2022 registration form by following this link.

To honor David Ware on his 60th birthday you are invited to make a gift to the Covenant Fund. The Covenant Fund was initiated in 2017 and complements our on‐going Community Engagement work and giving. Meant to be flexible and responsive, the Fund invites us to address the root causes of poverty, advocating for good education, housing, health care, nutrition, workforce development, and more. If you would like to honor David in this way please write a check to The Church of the Redeemer with “Covenant Fund – David’s 60th” in the memo line. Contributions may also be made online by clicking here and choosing the Covenant Fund for your gift fund.
