Clergy Reflection

Ignatius of Loyola was raised to question everything. He was born in the Basque Region of northern Spain in 1491 and one of his older brothers accompanied that first discovery voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. His upbringing was a front row seat to the advent reality that the world was actually much bigger than they had thought it was, the understanding of what is possible came into question daily as family dinner conversations were steeped in imaginations, stories, and the occasional updates from what to them was a new world. At his own coming of age, Ignatius, in typical dramatic form, handed his sword and armor over to God to follow in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi and the other saints who chose poverty over riches, humility over pride, and community over self-importance. He would go on to undergo a lifelong transformation that led him to found the Society of Jesus, known today as the Jesuits. His lasting gifts to the universal church include the Spiritual Exercises, countless schools and universities across the globe, international and local social justice and advocacy centers that serve immigrant, refugee, and asylum communities, and a worldview that is committed to finding God in all things.

Evensong this Sunday @ 5 p.m.

The Rev. Keith Johnson and the Redeemer Choir will offer Evensong for the Feast of the Presentation at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1. Evensong is a uniquely Anglican service centered on the Psalm, Canticle (Magnificat & Nunc dimittis), lessons, and prayers. Evensong usually lasts about 45 minutes.

The Redeemer Choir will offer George Dyson’s beautiful settings of the Magnificat (The song of Mary) and Nunc dimittis (the song of Simeon) in F, Philip Radcliffe’s setting of the Preces and Responses, and Johann Eccard’s When to the temple Mary went. We hope that you will join us.

Please join us for a Sacred Ground Eucharist- Wednesday, Feb 11 @ 7:00 p.m. in the chapel

During the past six years, Redeemer has invited small groups of parishioners to walk through chapters of America's history of race and racism focused on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. Sacred Ground is a film and readings-based dialogue series, grounded in faith, hope, and love, reflecting the Episcopal Church's long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, church ministries, and society. As three new groups complete the 11-part Sacred Ground course, Redeemer invites past-and-present Sacred Ground participants, and all interested parishioners, to celebrate this ministry together with a Holy Eucharist and charge to continue the important and timely work of racial healing, reconciliation, and justice.

Start Lent with a Writing Workshop

In conjunction with the 2026 VOICES Lenten Speaker Series, we are excited to offer a writing workshop, “I Know About a Thousand Things: Letter Writing as a Spark for Creativity,” with poet Naomi Shihab Nye and essayist Marion Winik, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 1 – 4 p.m. in the parish hall.

This three-hour workshop centers on the book I Know About a Thousand Things: The Writings of Ann Alejandro of Uvalde, Texas, a collection of excerpts from Ann’s letters and other occasional writing. It is led by the book’s co-editors, Naomi Shihab Nye and Marion Winik, longtime friends of the author, and each other, and writers themselves. The collection is the result of the promise they made to Ann, who died in 2019 at the age of 64, to pull together and publish a book from the thousands of pages of her writing she left in their care.

Click here to learn more about the workshop.

The cost of the workshop is $60 (includes a copy of the book) and is limited to 30 participants. Please use this link to sign up.

Ellen Chatard to Retire

Ellen Spiva Chatard doesn’t remember a time without Redeemer. A product of our Sunday School and youth group, Ellen later followed her mother in a key role within parish administration. She and husband Albert were married here, raised four children here, and witnessed a passel of family baptisms and weddings here, so Ellen knows our programs and possibilities here from top to bottom, inside and out. Eighteen years ago, while serving a term on the vestry, Ellen was hired as the Director of Stewardship and Development for the geothermal campaign. As that work was completed, she became the Director of Program, a position from which she will retire on Sunday, March 22.

Ellen has been an extraordinary partner in ministry for me and for so many others. Her quiet, probing questions have kept many a ship on course. Her commitment to and passion for Redeemer is genuine and palpable. She is a trusted colleague and a valued friend, and I am so thankful for her. Stay tuned for ways we will give thanks as a parish for Ellen and her work.

We have reconfigured her position as the Director of Administration, and a link to the job description is here. We will disseminate the posting through e-Redeemer and the Diocese, and I hope you will spread the news. Joining our team at Redeemer, I believe, is an incredible opportunity for growth and challenge.

Love,

David

Weekday Service Schedule

Monday mornings @ 8:00 a.m. on Zoom. Join Keith Johnson for Morning Prayer. Rooted in the Book of Common Prayer, this time-honored practice of psalms, scripture, and prayer helps center our lives in God as the week begins. Click here to join on Zoom.

Tuesday mornings @ 8:00 a.m. in the church. Join David Ware for Holy Eucharist and a lively exchange on the Gospel reading.

Wednesday mornings @ 8:00 a.m. in the chapel. Join Cristina Paglinauan for Embodied Eucharist which invites gentle stretching, mindful breathing, guided meditation or centering prayer followed by a simple Eucharist. Yoga mats are welcome but are not required.

First Wednesdays of the month @ 12 noon in the chapel. Join Keith Johnson for a Healing Eucharist. This service includes Holy Communion and prayers for healing, offering space to bring before God the needs of body, mind, and spirit, as we seek God’s grace and wholeness.

Thursday mornings @ 8 a.m. in the chapel. Join Josh Laws for an Ignatian Eucharist in the chapel. Ignatian Prayer is a centuries-old approach to spirituality that seeks to weave together the stories of our scriptures, the experiences of our lives, and the God who is present throughout it all. This Eucharist will invite us to practice imaginative prayer, each week entering into one story from the Bible and letting Spirit bring it to life.

2026 Stewardship

O God, grant us wisdom and courage for this day: a discipline that helps us become the people we aspire to be, the strength to overcome the obstacles we encounter or create, a path to navigate local and national tension. The Spirit at Redeemer sustains us, and our pledge expresses palpable thanks: “I am your disciple Lord, and I commit to bring healing through my steps. I stand in solidarity with this community of faith, and I will serve God alongside them.”

A commitment of a pledge says "Yes. We're all in! We belong here."
