Clergy Reflection

I recently came across a poem by Mary Oliver called “Just as the Calendar Began to Say Summer.” It’s great and is really speaking to my experience of summer this year. She laments that just as she’s starting to forget and “heal” from the memorizing of multiplication tables, learning how to be “successful”, and making sure to always produce results; she finds herself at summer’s end, “summoned back to the chalky rooms and the desks,” trying to hold onto the memories of how “the river kept rolling its pebbles, the way the wild wrens sang though they hadn’t a penny in the bank, the way the flowers were dressed in nothing but light.”

As I wade into the waters at St. Paul’s, I’m reminded a bit of the magic of summer. Wandering through empty school buildings, I can almost feel the way these walls are resting, breathing, renewing themselves as they await the return of students and teachers, shouts and gasps, lessons and promptings, laughs and tears, cheers and jeers.

Sunday School Registration is Open

Gift Cards for Johnston Square Elementary Teachers

It won't be long before the teachers at Johnston Square Elementary will be getting ready for the new school year. Teachers often use their own money for supplies and we want to offset their expenses. Redeemer is planning to provide 25 teachers with $75 Lakeshore Learning gift cards. If you would like to contribute to the effort, please make your donation by check or online by Sunday, August 9, 2026, with a note marking it “JSES Teachers.” Thank you for your continued support of the school.

Summer Needs at CARES

The CARES food pantry in Govans needs our support this summer. Please bring your contributions with you to church on Sunday and leave them in the hall outside of the Welcome Center. We will take care of delivering them to CARES.

Monday Morning Prayer

Clergy-led weekday services are on a break until the fall. Lay-led morning prayer from the Book of Common Prayer are offered Mondays at 8 a.m. over Zoom.

Praying the Lords Prayer in Spanish

Starting on Pentecost, for a number of weeks we are saying the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish in solidarity with our immigrant sisters and brothers in Maryland and with the Redeemer pilgrims walking the Camino in Spain. Want to practice? Here’s a video of the prayer.

Copies of a pronunciation guide are available on the tables near the Welcome Center.

Four lemons are resting on a wood table beside a pitcher of lemonade with lemon slices and mint leaves.

Sign Up to Help Host Lemonade in the Courtyard on an August Sunday

Do you have a friendly smile? Whether you are new to us or you are a longtime parishioner, this is a great opportunity to be a welcoming face and to get to know our church community better. Sign up to host the lemonade table in the front courtyard after the 10 a.m. service.

Last date available: Aug. 23.

How it works: We provide the supplies. A table will be set up in the courtyard before the service. As a volunteer, please leave the service after receiving Communion to bring the refreshments from the kitchen to the courtyard using a cart. When most folks have left the courtyard (roughly 11:45 a.m.), cleanup involves bringing the supplies back to the kitchen and giving the pitchers a quick rinse. Sign up to help on a Sunday in August. Questions? Contact Christina Way.

2026 Stewardship

O God, grant us wisdom and courage for this day: a discipline that helps us become the people we aspire to be, the strength to overcome the obstacles we encounter or create, a path to navigate local and national tension. The Spirit at Redeemer sustains us, and our pledge expresses palpable thanks: “I am your disciple Lord, and I commit to bring healing through my steps. I stand in solidarity with this community of faith, and I will serve God alongside them.”

A commitment of a pledge says Yes. We're all in! We belong here.

Name Tags, please

With so many new faces among us – both in the congregation and among our staff members – we encourage everyone to wear a name tag. The name tag table is located in the narthex. If you already have a name tag, please find yours in the bins alphabetized by last name. If you are new to us or can’t find your tag, please make a temporary one with the supplies provided and sign up for a name tag on the clipboard. We will have one for you by the next Sunday.
